We are looking for energetic and driven individuals with a Level 3 qualification in a health or related field and hands-on experience working with expectant mothers and families or community groups, within a health or voluntary sector role.

The position involves collaborating with both the public health team and maternity teams to adopt a comprehensive, behavior-based strategy in supporting expectant mothers and their families, offering a range of early assistance and guidance to encourage a healthy pregnancy and tailoring efforts to diminish health disparities encountered by families under your care. This could encompass activities like aiding in smoking cessation, providing advice on physical activity, infant feeding, immunizations, and endorsing a healthy lifestyle.

You will collaborate with the maternity tobacco dependency team and public health team to offer behavioral assistance and treatment to foster changes that support a healthier pregnancy. Additionally, you will attend to women in priority groups who confront worse outcomes in maternity and healthcare, including those facing complex social needs and those from ethnic minority backgrounds.

The role of the Best Start in Life Advisor is versatile and will entail engagement across various core public health priorities to create opportunities for providing the best start in life.

Main Duties of the Job

- Work with a caseload of expectant mothers and families during pregnancy and the early postnatal period to advocate for the best start in life for every child. This will involve working in both hospital and community settings, delivering support in Family Hubs, family residences, and community locations.

- Support the broader 'Best Start in Life' initiative within the public health and wider maternity team.

- Assist in managing and prioritizing a caseload in the maternity Best Start in Life pathways to ensure safe, well-coordinated, and evidence-based care is extended to all service users. Provide support in various settings as needed for the implementation of smoking cessation services, which may involve remote assistance via phone, video conferencing, or face-to-face interactions.

- Support the achievement of key performance and reporting benchmarks for tobacco dependency services.

The Public Health Team is housed at North Tyneside General Hospital, while the Best Start in Life team operates from various locations across the entire Trust region. The individual in this role will oversee a caseload of women/families in a specific area. We particularly encourage applications from individuals residing in or keen on working in West Northumberland.

Job Responsibilities

- Collaborate with the maternity and public health teams to deliver comprehensive care rooted in a behavior-based approach to expectant mothers and their families, concentrating on lessening health inequalities and promoting a healthy pregnancy.

- The incumbent should possess a functional understanding of public health and maternity services, coupled with demonstrated experience working with vulnerable families in a community context.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Knowledge of public health/community services/maternity care procedures and practices; obtained through NVQ3 plus additional training to diploma level equivalent, or similar through short courses or experience
  • Diploma or equivalent relevant qualification, foundation degree; or NVQ3 level qualification plus short courses or relevant experience to diploma level. Have experience working either within maternity or a healthcare-related community setting, with vulnerable patients/clients
  • Level 3 qualification in relevant subject or equivalent experience
  • Experience working and communicating with vulnerable families
  • Experience working in health or voluntary community settings

Desirable

  • Certificate/Professional qualification in a related field
  • Level 2 smoking cessation training
  • Motivational behavior training

Experience

Essential

  • Experience working with local community groups, health sector, or voluntary sector in some capacity
  • Understanding of the underlying factors affecting health and challenges faced by communities in multiple deprivation areas
