Water Resources

Central Belt, United Kingdom Scottish Water Full time
Together we are Trusted to Serve Scotland.

As the guardian of Scotland's public water supply, Scottish Water is continually planning for the future.

The Water Resource Planning & Supply Optioneering team is a pan Scotland team responsible for a wide range of activities related to water continuity and resilience of the water supply to support a flourishing Scotland.

We also play a vital role in managing Scottish Water's activities for water abstraction and impoundment, to ensure the protection and improvement of Scotland's water environment.

We're a friendly, welcoming, and supportive team of specialists who share a commitment to managing Scotland's most precious resource.

What you'll do

As a Water Planner with the Water Resource Planning & Supply Optioneering team, you will play a leading role in developing plans to ensure a sufficient and resilient water supply for the public and economy, with a particular focus on developing large regional strategies.

Water resource risk is a system issue, which can be addressed through a number of approaches, from developing new sources, expanding treatment capacity and interconnectivity between systems, through to managing demand and network leakage.

This range of potential options requires lateral thinking and an appreciation for interventions in complex systems.

You will be responsible for advancing projects through Scottish Water's Project Investment Appraisal (PIA) process, which is a systematic method for analysing risks and developing solutions.

The process requires an analysis of cost, environmental impact and customer benefit to ensure we find the right solution.

Scottish Water is proud of its commitment to reach Net Zero by 2040. Critical to that mission is reducing the embodied emissions of our capital programme, and emissions from our operational assets.

You will play a key role in this, in working to develop low carbon capital options which result in a carbon efficient asset base for the future.

What you'll need

The main responsibilities of the role are to develop long term plans to ensure the public are provided with a resilient water supply while protecting the water environment.

To do this you will need an ability to analyse complex systems in a systematic way.

Ideally educated to at least honours degree level, experience of working with natural hazards, particularly hydro hazards, would be a strong advantage, as would experience working with one or more of: Integrated Water Resource Management (IWRM), water network management, water treatment, climate change projections, or Water Resource Planning.

In particular, an ability to understand (or ability to learn) how water resource availability varies statistically, in both intra and inter annual scales, will be important.

Applicants will be considered from non-water related backgrounds if able to demonstrate experience and understanding of complex systems. Experience in construction, infrastructure and utilities management would be an advantage.

The role incorporates both data analytics and a high degree of people interaction - so you'll need to be comfortable with both: Data-wise, you'll need good analytical skills with the ability to gather, interpret, and analyse complex data to drive informed decision-making, including the ability to make reasoned assumptions to bridge gaps.

People-wise, you'll need a friendly and positive attitude and the ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and external stakeholders.

You'll also need to be a confident communicator and able to break down complex information into clear and concise language for different audiences, including in workshops and writing of clear and concise reports.

Looking out for you

While the work we do is important, we know it's not the only thing that matters. That's why we make sure you have everything you need to find a good work-life balance.

This is a full-time job, working 37 hours from Monday to Friday. But you'll get plenty of time to recharge with 38 days of holiday every year (including public holidays). And you can even buy five more if you need a little extra time. You can also take paid time off to volunteer in your community.

When it comes to major life events we have family-friendly policies around adoption, maternity, and parental leave. And for the everyday? We embrace flexible working.

For your future, there's our pension (the 'know-what-you'll-get-when-you-retire' kind), as well as life assurance.

As for some nice extras? You can expect an annual company bonus.

Not to mention access to SW Splash - handy rewards that can save you money on holidays, bills, and shopping.

The starting salary for this role will be between £35,384 and £47,924
