The duties and responsibilities of the post will be undertaken in accordance with the policies, procedures and practices of MAAC which may be amended from time to time.

Clinical To provide the highest standards of clinical care whilst operating in a range of clinical environments in line with MAAC Policies and Procedures (SOPs).

To competently undertake other additional skills in accordance with MAACs SOPs and governance arrangements.


Undertake manual handling of equipment and patients, having appropriately risk assessed each occasion using appropriate moving and handling techniques and equipment where provided.

To have a thorough understanding of all equipment being used in the delivery of patient care, including ability to interpret and utilise data.

Within the multidisciplinary team, select the appropriate destination hospital, considering the patients needs based on clinical assessment and diagnosis.

To maintain a safe and clean environment for patients and staff, initiating appropriate actions to achieve this, following MAACs infection prevention and control policy.


To undertake the effective completion of patient care records in accordance with MAAC SOPs and to demonstrate awareness of information governance policies.

To undertake appropriate record keeping in line with key organisational requirements. Respond to major incidents as part of mobile medical team in support of the wider ambulance service response. Operate in difficult, hazardous and remote conditions ensuring appropriate equipment is available at all incidents.

Provide clinical hand-over to receiving team using the ATMIST system at the relevant Emergency Department.

To provide therapeutic pharmacological interventions in accordance with Patient Group Directions and partner guidelines To undertake and document all Continuing Professional Development in line with regulatory standards.

Communication To communicate effectively with both internal and external stakeholders.

Communicate effectively with patients and their relatives in a calm and compassionate manner, where appropriate allowing them to make informed choice about their healthcare needs.

Able to present complex information to a range of audiences in a manner they understand. A commitment to participate in public relations activities on behalf of the charity.

These will include representing the charity at such functions as cheque presentations, undertaking speaking engagements and delivery of presentations to large groups of people, aircraft tours and assisting the charity in fund raising and public awareness.

To undertake effective and appropriate radio and telephone communications utilising a range of technologies.


Liaise with the communications team when required ensuring that the use of personal information conforms to the requirements of the Data Protection Act and Caldicott guidelines.

Maintain communication with appropriate ambulance emergency operations centre at all times.

Aviation Work in collaboration with the Enhanced Care Desk and ensure appropriate utilisation of air assets based on the clinical information available.

To actively participate in effective Crew Resource Management in order to minimise human error.


To operate safely in an aviation environment and in accordance with the designated Air Operator and as directed by the Pilot.

Safe preparation and positioning of the aircraft prior to the shift start according to local procedures. Participation in pre-shift briefing including information gathering prior to the brief as directed by the pilot.

Interpretation and communication of aviation and meteorological information to the Enhanced Care Desk and its impact on HEMS operations as required.


Assisting the pilot with aviation during flight operations, including complex procedures such as navigation, communication, aircraft systems, meteorology, pre-landing and pre-take off checks and aviation emergency management.

Follow HEMS policies and procedures.

Maintenance of flight log and operational currency Correct and safe refuelling of the aircraft under the instruction of the pilot including rotor running refuel when appropriate.

General care of the aircraft including cleaning, tidiness, restock and readiness.

Safe housing and security of the aircraft after the shift has finished according to local procedures. Operational Operate as part of a roster system covering a range of shifts including unsocial hours. To operate at a variety of locations. Thorough checking of aircraft/Critical Care Car equipment (CCC) (including PPE) and restocking drugs/kit as necessary by MAAC SOPs.

Ensure that drugs and Controlled Drugs are stored, booked out and any usage recorded correctly.

Participate in airbase daily tasks undertaking completion of checks on consumables and stores to ensure sufficiency to maintain stock levels.
