Job description:

The AIBs are highly respected and are responsible for conducting investigations into accidents and incidents which help improve safety in these areas.

Working across aviation, maritime and rail transport sectors this role is varied, interesting and fast paced.

We're looking for a confident and enthusiastic individual to work in this newly created role supporting the Head of External Communications protecting and enhancing the reputation of the three AIBs.

They'll be plenty of scope to be creative as you'll get the chance to devise content that communicates our safety messages across our digital channels.

We believe that different perspectives and experiences improve the calibre of work we produce.

Our team represents a variety of backgrounds and previous careers, and if you join us you will be supported to develop your skills and kickstart an exciting career in communications.

Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • You will play an important role responding to media enquiries, working with our on-call team of inspectors and senior managers to agree responses that inform our stakeholders.
  • You will also work proactively, devising creative communications activity that maximises awareness of our investigation reports. You will be able to employ a range of skills and channels to deliver our messages, working with colleagues to plan and create content to communicate our findings in the most effective way.
  • You will be able to produce high quality written materials (press releases, opinion pieces, blogs and social media posts) for different platforms that ensure our messages reach the audiences who need to be aware of them.
  • You will play a key role monitoring and evaluating our communications activity so that we keep abreast of emerging stories and ensure that we are maximising our communications output.
  • You will also have the opportunity to attend accident sites to support colleagues with media interviews or by fielding and responding to calls from media.

For further information, please refer to the role profile attached.

Person specification:

About You

We will look for you to be a confident and talented writer, able to draft long form articles as well as snappy social media posts.

You can produce high quality written material, reviewing detailed reports to extract the key points of information and delivering it in a way that is easily understood by our varied audiences.

You'll need to be calm in a crisis and able to work at pace, the nature of the AIB's work requires us to respond to accidents or emergency situations quickly and our communications need to keep up with that.

You will need to be creative when it comes to media opportunities, but also able to handle reactive media work, providing first-rate media advice and support to inspectors, senior managers and stakeholders.

To that end, we require:

  • Experience in communications, journalism, news or PR.
  • Excellent news sense and firstrate media handling skills.
  • Ability to spot proactive media opportunities.
