We have a very exciting opportunity for a
Regional
Press Officer - London & South East of England to join the RSPCA Press team to manage the proactive and reactive media work in their particular region.


Working in one of the country's busiest charity press offices, you'll be directly impacting animal welfare by raising awareness, promoting fundraising campaigns and supporting the work of our frontline Inspectorate.


Since the RSPCA was founded in a London coffee shop in 1824 we have, by all lawful means, strived to prevent cruelty, promote kindness to and alleviate the suffering of all animals.

The role will be home based but some travel to events and meetings will be expected.

The RSPCA works 365 days a year rescuing and rehabilitating animals of all types from abuse, neglect, and injury.

Here's some of the key work that you will be doing...

  • Respond to regional press queries relating to the work, policies and campaigns of the Society
    in London and the South East of England:
  • Write and research news releases, statements, Q&As and other relevant documents.
  • Promote RSPCA campaigns and events to the regional media.
  • Act as RSPCA spokesperson on general animal welfare issues.
  • Promote the work of the RSPCA's frontline officers, animal centers and branches.
  • Analyse and report on the impact of RSPCA press output both in terms of media coverage gained; traction with key target media; but also its wider impact in supporting the organisational objectives and new RSPCA Strategy.
  • Develop and formulate relationships with key media outlets and journalists.
  • Be a national and local spokesperson on general and speciality animal welfare issues, undertaking radio/TV interviews as required.
  • Initiate and maintain contacts with all relevant journalists, broadcasters and PR agencies, internal departments and other departments.
What we are looking for in you...

  • Previous experience working as a journalist and/or press officer, combined with the ability to build good working relationships both within and outside of the organisation.
  • Ability to deliver to deadlines, working off your own initiative.
  • Postgraduate NCTJ qualification which includes the modules of media law and court reporting, local and central government, 100wpm shorthand, news writing and newspaper journalism.
  • Ability and willingness to travel to RSPCA locations and events, if necessary.
  • Ability to prioritise own workload and take a flexible approach to work duties.
  • Willingness to work occasional unsociable hours.
