Band 7 Community Adult Speech and Language Therapist

We are a small, welcoming team providing speech and language therapy to adults in the community based at Hadleigh Clinic in South East Essex.

We need a confident Band 7 Speech and Language Therapist to join us, evaluating and treating individuals with various acquired and progressive neurological conditions, non-neurological conditions, and voice disorders. The role is diverse and fulfilling, genuinely impacting our patients' quality of life.

Applicants must be fully dysphagia trained, with a minimum of 4 years' experience as a qualified speech and language therapist. The ideal candidate should possess current HCPC Registration, a wide range of clinical skills, including supervisory and managerial experience. This part-time role requires 15 hours a week, Monday to Friday, with no weekend work.

Having a vehicle, a valid UK driving licence, and existing business insurance coverage are essential for this position.

Main Duties of the Job

- Support the Adult Community Speech and Language Therapy Service across South East Essex

- Assess and plan management for adults with a variety of acquired and progressive communication and swallowing disorders

- Provide therapy programs and demonstrations of activities to enable skill generalization

- Supervise and support less experienced therapists and assistant practitioners treating patients

Job Description

Job Responsibilities

  • Assess, diagnose, and manage individuals with communication and swallowing disorders
  • Support and supervise less experienced therapists and assistant practitioners
  • Maintain communication with Lead Speech and Language Therapist regarding any relevant changes
  • Independently prioritize and manage clinical caseload
  • Ensure accurate assessment leading to appropriate interventions
  • Develop individual care plans based on best practices
  • Use clinical assessment to support decision-making regarding patient capacity and consent
  • Implement clinical practice adaptation to meet patient and carer needs
  • Maintain accurate case notes and submit activity data as required
  • Ensure proper care and maintenance of equipment and supplies
  • Engage in risk management, quality standards setting, and clinical governance
  • Supervise and support less experienced SLTs, students, and assistants
  • Adhere to professional practice standards set by RCSLT, HPC, and service policies
  • Work within Speech and Language Therapy Operational Policy and Clinical Guidelines

Person Specification

Education/Qualifications

Essential

  • Recognised Speech and Language Therapy Degree qualification or equivalent
  • Health & Care Professions Council registration number
  • Completion of RCSLT dysphagia competencies

Desirable

  • Registered Member of Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists
  • Successful completion of a post-basic dysphagia course recognized by RCSLT

Knowledge

Essential

  • Specialist knowledge relevant to acquired and progressive neurological speech and language disorders
  • Specialist knowledge relevant to acquired and progressive neurological swallowing disorders
  • Understanding of national policies, current research, and clinical governance
  • Awareness of record keeping, confidentiality, and roles of other professionals

Desirable

  • Cultural and linguistic awareness working with a multi-cultural caseload

Skills/Experience

Essential

  • Minimum 3 years' experience with specialist adult caseload
  • Experience in managing swallowing and communication issues
  • Ability to work well within a multidisciplinary team
  • Strong interpersonal, negotiation, and problem-solving skills
  • Good analytical, presentation, and time management skills
  • Independence, initiative, and ability to prioritize workload demands
  • Previous experience in supporting and supervising clinical staff
  • Capability to act autonomously in emergency situations
