Place Services is a multi-disciplinary consultancy within Essex County Council providing environmental and planning services to the Council, local authorities and other public bodies. Our purpose is to support the public sector to deliver sustainable development. The purpose of the Assistant Ecological Consultant is to support the effective delivery of ecological services to clients across the UK.

The post holder will provide ecological support, including development management and policy advice; habitat and species management and creation projects; completing ecological assessments and straightforward habitat and protected species surveys; and undertaking supervised specialist tasks on multi-disciplinary projects.

The role requires a graduate level practitioner with knowledge of development management processes, legislation, policy, standards, and guidance; information management and communication skills; and a collaborative, enterprising, and client focused approach.

Accountabilities

Contributing to effective delivery of a range of ecological and countryside management services including: assisting with a case load of straight forward and minor development management consultations at all stages of the planning/consent process; assisting with evaluating and completing ecological assessments (e.g. EcIA, HRA, PEAR) of limited scope and complexity; advising on small-scale and simple habitat/species management or habitat creation projects; supporting the completion of habitat and protected/priority species surveys; and completing supervised tasks as part of multi-disciplinary projects.Helping collect, analyse, present, and preserve data, evidence (including for enforcement) and advice to recognised standards, reviewing outcomes, and assessing third party compliance.Supporting development and review of plans, policies, and guidance.Assisting the development and delivery of learning and promotional material, training activities and events, and engaging with networks, to enhance the recognition and reputation of Place Services.Assisting bids for low-value opportunities and helping to monitor contractors and volunteers against specifications, indicators and budgets on low value contracts and minor projects.Supporting the maintenance of a professional, client-focused culture and improved client relationships, helping secure feedback for continuous improvement.Supporting improvements to the effectiveness and efficiency of service delivery.Developing own commercial awareness of our business. Skills, Knowledge and Experience Educated to RQF level 6 (Bachelor's degree) in a relevant subject, or equivalent by experience.Evidence of continuing professional development with membership of, or working towards, Qualifying Membership of CIEEM.Graduate level technical practitioner with knowledge of development management processes; policy, legislation, enforcement, standards and guidance; ecological assessment and evaluation; habitat/species identification and survey; habitat/species management and habitat creation; and related office and site-based practices and procedures.Able to work, under supervision, as part of a multi-disciplinary team, prioritizing across a range of projects and activities, meeting deadlines and delivering outcomes, with an awareness of systems and processes for effective project management.Awareness of wellbeing and H&S, with ability to undertake simple risk assessments, and to implement safe working practices.Able to communicate appropriately with different audiences, including through supervised clear and concise technical advice, documents and reports for straightforward casework and projects, and at public consultations.Able to establish positive working relationships, with awareness of good client service.Able to use common software packages and, under supervision, relevant specialist software such as GIS, to record and present a range of data, and to carry out straightforward research, analysis and interpretation.
