Job summary

This is a Senior Public Health Practitioner (Policy and Impact Assessment)role within the Policy and International Health', WHO Collaborating Centre (WHO CC) on 'Investment for Health and Wellbeing' Directorate and the Wales Health Impact Assessment Support Unit (WHIASU). The role will support several aspects of Health Impact Assessment and policy work at a national and local level including the provision of assistance to other public bodies to carry out HIAs under the Public Health (Wales) Act 2017 and will require a degree of flexibility to cover the breadth of work that the teams are involved in post holder will support the development and effective use of the health impact assessment (HIA) approach in Wales through building partnerships and collaborations with key statutory, voluntary, community and private organisations in order to support the planning, implementation and evaluation of local and national needs and priorities including , Health, Social Care and Wellbeing Strategies, Local Development and Wellbeing you are enthusiastic and motivated, then this is an exciting opportunity for you to join our highly talented, cross functional, dynamic and friendly team.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will provide specialist advice and support to those who are in the process of conducting HIAs including those public bodies required to carry out HIAs under the Public Health (Wales) Act 2017 and where appropriate, the facilitation of Health Impact Assessments and training practitioners through using the HIA approach. This necessitates not just an understanding of current public health strategy, policy and practice but also that of non-health sectors such as waste planning, land use planning, transport planning, employment, education, and housing.

The post holder will also represent the Wales Health Impact Assessment Support Unit (WHIASU) internally and externally with local and national organisations such as Local Authorities, Local Health Boards and Community and Third sector groups to raise awareness of health impact assessment and regularly deliver presentations and training sessions on the process at a local and a national level.

The post holder will be expected to contribute to HIAs, the provision of new research, and provide access to existing evidence, which will inform and improve judgements about the potential impacts of policies, programmes and projects and support the health promotion and illness prevention agenda in Wales.

Masters or equivalent in Public Health/Health Promotion or allied discipline or equivalent professional qualification or experience

Experience

Essential

Substantial experience in public health/health improvement. Experience of working with a range of professionals and implementing programmes in a variety of settings including clinical settings Experience of working across a number of organisations/sectors and/or with a number of programmes, including development, managing and evaluation of significant elements of work.

Skills

Essential

Excellent communication and analytical skills Ability to work successfully with diverse professional partners and manage potentially conflicting perspectives Research methods including data collection and analysis Ability to initiate and implement programmes that promote health and well-being. Management of meetings Multi-media presentation skills. Training skills including training needs analysis and evaluation IT skills.

Knowledge

Essential

Understanding of NHS/local government policy agenda and Public Health environment. Practical knowledge of public health practice, health promotion models Evidence base underpinning work and the health and wellbeing agenda. Practical knowledge relating behaviour change theory and practice.
