Project Worker 2

Lothian, United Kingdom Barnardo's Full time

The Edinburgh Positive Wellbeing Project is a new service for Barnardo's Scotland which aims to improve the mental health and wellbeing, and reduce the impact of distress, of children and young people aged between 5 and 24 in Edinburgh who are affected by the imprisonment of a family member. Our long-term aim is to break the inter-generational transmission of adversity for families and promote better mental health and wellbeing for children, young people and families.

Adopting a whole-family, strength -based, approach our services will be available to families online or in person 7 days per week and will offer a range of group and individual supports designed with service users to address their individual needs and goals and promote their mental health and wellbeing.

Services will be delivered from HMP Edinburgh Visitors' Centre, other Barnardo's premises, community facilities and on an outreach basis.

Imprisonment of a family member is recognised as having potentially significant impact on the long term wellbeing of children and young people who often experience poorer outcomes in education and physical health, increased risk of their own involvement in the criminal justice system and increased likelihood of mental ill health.

Children and young people are known to be at increased risk of not meeting the SHANARRI outcomes appropriate to their developmental stage and a recent study found that separation through imprisonment is more damaging to a child's wellbeing than divorce or the death of a parent.

Figures show that more children in Scotland experience a parent's imprisonment than a parent's divorce and there are 2.5 times as many children of prisoners than there are children in care.

The Family Worker will work alongside children, young people and their families to understand how they are impacted by their experiences, to plan and deliver bespoke support to address needs and to evaluate the efficacy of provision.

The postholder will work alongside other services involved in children and young people's lives and will work at all times in the best interests of the child or young person, ensuring their rights are met and their views are respected.

The child or young person will always be the centre of focus for the postholder when making decisions about their lives or interventions.

  • Experienced in working with and alongside children, young people, and families in creative and flexible ways
  • Confident in managing risk and ensuring children and young people are safe at home and in the community
  • Focused on the rights of children and young people in their work and all they do
  • Traumainformed and understands the impact of imprisonment upon children, young people, and families
  • Confident in working within GIRFEC approaches and is an effective contributor to multiagency work with other professionals to meet the needs of children, young people, and families
The Edinburgh Positive Wellbeing Project is funded 2 years by the City of Edinburgh Council

Please see the attached Additional Information Sheet and Job Profile detailing further information and requirements for this role.
