Job summary

This is a fantastic opportunity for someone with an interest in research to develop their skills within this area.

The post holder will be working for the R&D Department based at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

The post holder will be supporting researchers across the Trust to develop research protocols and assist with submitting projects for the relevant approvals.

Specialist knowledge and skills are advantageous but can be gained in setting-up, conducting and supporting all aspects of the research projects.

Experience will be gained in different elements of the research projects including assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating research and providing support to staff who are involved in research at the ROH.

Aspects of the role will include, keeping the R&D database (EDGE) up to date, study logistics, costings, update of study files and liaising with researchers (externally and internally).

Main duties of the job

To be responsible for supporting researchers in the design of research protocols and the general set-up of research studies, preparing them for Trust approval. This will include registering new studies on the R&D database, performing literature searches for similar projects and providing feedback on proposals.

The post holder will provide administrative support to the Research Governance Manager and the Head of research, Audit and development researchers and clients both internal and external to the Trust. They will be required to have an understanding of Research, demonstrate a variety of administrative skills to effectively communicate with external collaborators, researchers and multi-disciplinary staff across the Trust.

Job description

Job responsibilities

To liaise with researchers and collaborators as a first point of contact for new proposals. To assist researchers to develop and compose research protocols, making them suitable for regulatory approvals. To perform literature searches relating to research protocols in order to find similar studies already conducted. To assess and perform initial critique of research protocols. To engage with researchers in order to reactivate pending research studies. To send research protocols to Independent Scientific Review Panel (ISAP). To check Research Tissue Bank (RTB) applications for completeness and circulate to the ISAP. To collate individual responses from the ISAP and liaise with the Head of R&D / Clinical Director for R&D when issuing an approval letter. To check NIHR portfolios for potential studies. To register new studies on the R&D database and EDGE To provide study documentation templates to ROH researchers and assist in the completion of such documentation. To assist ROH researchers when completing REC/HRA and other regulatory body applications, using the IRAS system. To be responsible for keeping researchers CVs up-to-date using the research CV template. To set up Investigator Site files for the Trust sponsored studies. To act as a contact person for co-ordinating centres/Sponsors and help set up the research at site. To manage and address ad hoc queries in a timely manner. Process any amendments that are required during study delivery. To assist in arranging meetings for research subgroups as and when required. To register all new research projects (and study amendments) onto the Research & Development Database and ensure that the database is kept up-to-date throughout the lifetime of the research project. To set up a file for all new research projects (including study amendments) registered with R&D and ensure that these files are kept up to date throughout the lifetime of the research projects. To liaise with the local investigator(s) and/or research team to complete SOA/SOE forms. To undertake the appropriate action to resolve issues for study set up by liaising with Support Services, Heads of Departments, Sponsors, HRA/RECs using own initiative. To draft approval letters for signature, ensuring that all approved documentation is listed, obtain appropriate signatures and circulate as necessary. To be proactive and a positive role model for junior members of staff and clients Be involved in the development of SOPs for post, so that others may act across in the absence of the post holder. To perform study monitoring in line with the ROH R&D Monitoring Studies SOP. Provide cover for non clinical members of the research and development team if required.

FINANCIAL

To maintain records of expenses/transport where appropriate.

To draft a study costing summary for all projects going through the trust approval process. To ensure that appropriate, legal and comprehensive contracts are in place for each study including financial remuneration for running of studies. To assist in the costing of research studies as part of the funding proposals and then helping with the sourcing of funding.

CLINICAL

This is a non clinical role.

PEOPLE MANAGEMENT

To support in the induction of new staff into the department and educate them on the function of research governance.

To support/instruct the department administrator as and when required (this does not include line management).

COMMUNICATION AND WORKING RELATIONSHIPS

To maintain effective communication and working relationships with all internal and external project staff, supporting clinical services, departments within the Trust non-commercial bodies and pharmaceutical sponsors and Trust R & D. To participate in unit meetings and to attend meetings, seminars and conferences organised by the funding body when appropriate. To liaise with trust management staff such as clinical services managers, HR & Finance departments, to inform them of new studies and obtain their support as part of the approval process. To liaise with all relevant support services such as pharmacy, radiology and pathology to inform them of new studies and obtain their support as part of the trust approval process. To support with the calculation and invoicing of all studies.

ANALYTICAL AND JUDGEMENT Responsibilities

What level of analytical skills will be required?

To be responsible for checking for completion of documentation and requesting further documentation if necessary. To support and assist ROH researchers categorise their projects in line with national guidance. To be support the delivery team in completing logistics and feasibility reports.

The level of scrutiny when establishing study logistics is high as this will impact on a) practical day to day delivery of the study once opened and b) costing the study appropriately to ensure that the Trust is remunerated adequately to cover the cost of the project. PLANNING AND ORGANISATIONAL SKILLS

Research at the ROH is subject to study to study opening targets. The role will require a thorough, methodical approach to ensure that all targets are met.

Support in the scheduled oversight of studies once opened to ensure that any issues are corrected as soon as possible.
