Physiotherapy Technical Instructor/Assistant - Band 3Respiratory Specialist Team.

Salary from £22.8k - £24.3K with excellent NHS benefits, based in Bristol.


An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and empathetic individual to work as a Physiotherapy Technical Instructor within the Respiratory Specialist Team at North Bristol NHS Trust, working at both Southmead and Cossham Hospitals.


You will work alongside experienced respiratory physiotherapists and nurses and established technical instructors, and will also be part of a wider multidisciplinary team and the integrated respiratory service.


You will have a key role within a number of respiratory services supporting the delivery of highly effective treatment to patients with a wide range of respiratory conditions, bring variety to the role.

As a Physiotherapy Technical Instructor within the Respiratory Specialist Team you will be responsible for:

Supporting the delivery of group and home exercise and high quality supported self management to people living with chronic lung disease whilst working within the Pulmonary Rehabilitation service.

This will be your main role.


Assisting with the delivery of the COPD discharge bundle; a set of evidence-based actions aimed at improving patient outcomes following COPD exacerbation.


The Respiratory Specialist Team consists of experienced respiratory physiotherapists and nurses and Technical Instructors working across Southmead and Cossham Hospitals delivering essential treatment for people living with lung conditions.

To assist the registered practitioner by providing skilled and specialised support work.

To carry out, individual programmes of care/rehabilitation designed by the registered practitioner without direct supervision.

To enhance and progress physiotherapy treatment programmes without the direct presence of a registered therapist.

To support patients in the self management of their condition.

To provide support and advice to less experienced members of the team


Able to assess, observe, monitor, document and report any changes in the patient's condition to a senior member of the team, using own judgment and initiative.

To assess, demonstrate safe use of and provide equipment to patients and carers, including walking aids if required to support the Respiratory Specialist Team

Provide information and advice for Inpatients on Early Pulmonary Rehabilitation as part of the COPD discharge bundle.

To check and be able to demonstrate patients inhaler techniques following completion of set competencies.

To be responsible for maintaining accurate and comprehensive and contemporaneous patient treatment records in line with Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP) standards of practice and the Trusts electronic patient records systems (CISS, Cerner)

To participate in the staff appraisal scheme as an appraisee and be responsible for complying with the agreed objectives and personal development programme to meet set knowledge and competencies, plus service needs

To attend in-service and competency training sessions as appropriate

To undertake as directed the collection of data for use in service audit, research or monitoring of service

To undertake set respiratory outcome tests with patients as directed by physiotherapist e.g. ISWT, 6MWT and record results efficiently
