About the role:

The British Museum is seeking a dedicated individual with excellent documentation skills to join the Collection Projects and Resources team. The main purpose of this role is to complete due diligence research on unregistered material, and documentation of registered and unregistered collection-related material, as part of the Blythe House Decant Project. This is a varied role in a fast-paced project environment which offers the opportunity to work with a wide range of objects. Problem-solving is a key aspect of the role, and a flexible approach to working is essential. The role will be based at the Museum's outstation located on Orsman Road in Hackney, London.

Key areas of responsibility:

  • Improve the documentation of registered and unregistered collection-related material by checking relevant archival records and documents and investigating further literature including sale catalogues and relevant websites as required.
  • Review the inventory of unregistered material against existing records on the Museums collection management system (Museum Index+) and historical collection registers and deposit lists.
  • Improve the documentation of registered and unregistered collection-related material by updating the Museum's collection management system (Museum Index+)
  • To work as a member of a project team and assist in the general day-to-day running of the project.
  • To liaise with project stakeholders, including staff in curatorial departments, archivists, documentation colleagues, collection managers and conservators.

About you:

  • Educated to degree level in anthropology, cultural heritage, archaeology, or other relevant subject.
  • Knowledge of research techniques and the use of archive sources
  • Some experience of working with a collection or archive
  • Highly self-motivated with organisation and time management skills
  • Open, effective communicator with good spoken and written English
  • Excellent attention to detail and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work as part of a team.
