Forest Technician-Mountain Valley District

Job Description:

The Virginia Department of Forestry is looking for a Forest Technician to join their team in the Mountain Valley District which covers several counties in the Western Region. This position requires residency within 30 miles of the Salem office within 6 months of hire, and reports to the District Forester.

• Inspect harvested tracts to ensure compliance with regulations
• Enforce various forestry laws and protect forested land
• Provide fire suppression training and assist with prevention programs
• Collect field data and oversee tree planting projects
• Participate in special initiatives as needed

Minimum Requirements:

Natural resources/agricultural background, wildland firefighting knowledge, strong communication skills, ability to work independently, valid driver's license, and proficiency with PC and Microsoft Office.

Additional Qualifications:

Experience with Best Management Practices for logging, heavy equipment operation, wildland firefighting, and public speaking.

Special Instructions:

Confirmation of receipt will be provided upon successful submission. Obtain a Class B CDL within twelve months, be on-call during fire seasons, pass a fitness test, drug test, and background check.
