Sustainable Procurement Officer

Dorchester, Dorset, United Kingdom Dorset Councils Full time

Are you passionate about climate change and ready to make a difference? Join us to play a pivotal role in shaping how Dorset Council and our partners meet our net zero targets.

Join our dynamic specialist team as a Sustainable Procurement Officer, where you'll become an integral part of a close-knit group of experts with a wealth of skills and knowledge to inspire your professional growth.

We are dedicated to driving the delivery of Dorset Council's ambitious Natural environment, climate and ecology strategy, and to accelerate the sustainability objectives within our Commercial Strategy.

You'll play a central role in enabling us to achieve our goals.

Our vision is for a carbon neutral, nature positive and resilient Dorset.

Collaborating closely with a wide range of internal teams, external partners and stakeholders, your crucial contributions will help us to better embed sustainability within our procurement activity.

As a new and forward-thinking area of work, you'll be instrumental in strengthening relationships across the council's sustainability and procurement teams, as well as with our partners.

Your role will not only allow you to make a significant impact - it will also help to inspire positive change by others in our pursuit of a sustainable future.

What you can expect to be doing:
You will work collaboratively to help us strengthen sustainability within our approach to procurement.

You will help us to clarify our joint ambition, develop a toolkit to effect change, and help to ensure we can monitor the impact on our carbon footprint.

The work of the Sustainable Procurement Officer will form an integral part of the council's climate and ecology programme - working across our procurement and sustainability teams, and with external public sector partners and local suppliers.

You will be a driving force in helping us to assess and improve our policies, processes and training to help build our officers' skills, knowledge and capability on sustainable procurement.

You'll also strengthen our partnership and collaboration with Dorset's public sector partners.

You will help us to clarify priorities on where to intervene; and help us to better embed sustainability considerations in pre-procurement, specifications, tender evaluations and contract management processes.

Critically, this will be achieved by working with partners to co-develop local training, guidance and tools for non-specialists involved in commissioning, procuring, and managing goods and services.

About you:

As a highly motivated, knowledgeable, and experienced individual, you'll be confident in developing excellent working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

Your strong interpersonal and relationship-management skills will support the coordination of related working groups and workshops; liaising with internal and external colleagues to develop and deliver our approach.

You will also need to work effectively as part of very busy teams.

With strong project management skills, you will help to manage, deliver and monitor key outputs, as well as helping to prepare briefs, reports or other communications on progress to relevant stakeholders.

You'll be a true advocate for sustainability, with the ability to influence and facilitate meaningful positive change and buy-in amongst non-specialists.

You will have a deep understanding of sustainability and procurement policy and legislation.

This is a full time role at 37 hours per week, a fixed term contract until 30 June 2025.

At Dorset Council we value flexible working.

This is a hybrid role with much of the work able to be done remotely, with occasional travel to County Hall, Dorchester, and other locations as required.

Please ensure you read the context statement for detailed information about the role before applying.
