Research Associate

South Kensington, Greater London, United Kingdom Imperial College London Full time

The Department of Chemical Engineering is seeking a Research Associate to focus on the design of sustainable hard carbon anodes for Na-ion batteries, their test at pouch cell level and optimisation of the production processes.

Na-ion batteries are the next in line for commercialisation according to the EV giant CATL, with many other battery companies active within this space.

While many cathode materials have been developed for Na ion batteries, including metal layered oxides, polyanions or Prussian Blue analogues, a universal anode for Na-ion batteries does not exist to date.

Currently, the so-called hard carbons, which are a disordered form of carbon with curved and short-range graphene sheets stacked randomly with interlayer spacings larger than graphite and forming some closed pores between the nanocrystalline graphitic domains, represent the most promising class of materials for use as anodes in Na-ion batteries.

However, hard carbons are ill defined materials, and their Na storage mechanism can vary depending on their characteristics (interlayer spacing, curvature, defects, internal and external pores) which in turn will depend on the type of precursor used, the way of processing and the carbonisation temperature.

Duties and responsibilities:

Following on these previous studies, this project will be responsible for:

  • Scaling up the previous materials to kg scale to be widely used within Nexgenna
  • Perform a cost and environmental assessment of these hard carbon materials at scale and optimise their cost and performance.
  • Optimise the performance of hard carbons at pouch cell level by building multilayer pouch cells by pairing with various Nextgenna cathodes.
  • Work on understanding the fundamentals of the solid electrolyte interface at pouch cell level, for the best performing cells.

Essential requirements:

We are looking for a motivated research associate with research experience in battery testing especially at pouch cell level as well as process optimisation.

You should be able to work in a large and diverse team collaboratively and communicate effectively with all NEXTGENNA consortium members and broadly the Faraday Institution.

The main idea is to develop a universal anode to be used within the NEXTGENA consortium to accelerate the commercialisation of a 200Wh/kg Na-ion batteries in the UK.

You will ideally have deep theoretical knowledge and practical experience in carbon materials and electrochemistry including batteries, especially Na-ion batteries.

Good communication skills are required along with the ability to write high quality reports, draft patents and publications and work collaboratively with NEXTGENNA consortium and broadly the Faraday Institution.

Further information:

  • New appointments will have a maximum starting salary of £46,734 based on experience.
Further information about the post is available in the job description.

Closing date:
