Job summary

The Biochemistry department is looking to appoint an enthusiastic band 7Advanced Biomedical Scientist to join the team managing the day to day running& analytical quality of the Blood Sciences Laboratories at Dewsbury &District Hospital and Pinderfields Hospital within the Mid Yorkshire TeachingNHS Trust (MYTT).

The successful candidate will be responsible for the proteinelectrophoresis section, aspects of the automated chemistry sections as well asprovide support in the absence of other Advanced BMS on the team. Training ofstaff will be an integral part of the role in developing the team and theircareers.

Currently a managed service contract is in place providingBiochemistry equipment supplied by Advanced Instruments, Helena Biosciences, RocheDiagnostics, Sherwood Scientific & Tosoh Bioscience. A new managed service contractis currently being phased in across the West Yorkshire Association of AcuteTrusts with new equipment being installed at MYTT in 2025.

Main duties of the job

To be responsible for maintaining the analyticalquality of the department and assist in the supervision and development of allareas of biochemistry.

1.To carry out a broad range of scientific and technical work, includingthat of a specialist nature, within the section/department, as required by theChief Biomedical Scientist.

2.To carry out a range of specialist tasks depending on the area in whichyou work, such as:

EQA measurement, reporting and monitoring

Competency assessment

IQC monitoring

3.To maintain expertise in the Biochemistry Department by continuousprofessional development.

4.To attempt to solve analytical and technical problems encountered whileworking independently or identified by more junior staff.

5.To ensure that all procedures are subject to internal quality controland that the quality achieved meets the standards required by the department.

6.To ensure that all procedures are subject to scrutiny via ExternalQuality Assurance schemes. That any problems are identified and reported.

7.To identify, evaluate and develop new procedures and technologies.

8.To carry out technical validation of assays and investigations.

9.To have comprehensive knowledge of the full range of methods andtechniques used within your section and other sections of the department.

Job responsibilities

The post-holder will have responsibility for the day to day management of theteam providing the scientific and technical services of a section of the Department.

Key objectives include ensuring that:

The section provides a high quality and timely service to all users and that all staff within the section work to the agreed procedures and policies set out by the Chief Biomedical Scientist, Clinical Head of Department and Pathology Services Manager. The section(s) under their control are managed in an efficient and cost-effective way as agreed in consultation with the Chief Biomedical Scientist and Pathology Services Manager. Service developments to improve effectiveness are identified, assessed and where appropriate implemented after consultation with the Clinical Head of Department, Pathology Services Manager and Chief Biomedical Scientist. Lines of communication, both internally and externally, are clear and understood by all staff. The departmental procedures and health and safety rules are upheld and promoted at all times within the section. High professional and technical standards ( Authorised Standard Operating Procedures, Trust and National Policies), are promoted at all times in line with UKAS (United Kingdom Accreditation Service) guidelines. Training and mentoring requirements of basic and assistant grade staff are met in order to achieve the aims of the department. Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

MSc or equivalent level of experience Final Examination of the Institute of Biomedical Science or equivalent (In appropriate subject). A degree acceptable to HPC followed by State Registration. Current State Registration by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) Plus Specialist portfolio in relevant Clinical Biochemistry. Evidence of continuing professional development.

Desirable

Suitable Qualifications in Information Technology ( CLAIT/ECDL) Suitable Qualifications in Health and Safety Supervisory management qualification

Able to communicate clearly and precisely both verbally and in writing with patients and all levels of staff inside and outside Pathology. Able to produce simple documents such as standard operating procedures. Able to explain and implement new policies and procedures. Able to supervise more junior staff in a professional and competent manner.

Knowledge & Awareness

Essential

Evidence of a good understanding of the use and interpretation of quality control. Evidence of a good understanding of the use and interpretation of External Quality Assurance schemes.

Desirable

A wide knowledge of Health and Safety law and its application to Pathology. Experience of working in disciplines of Pathology other than that for which applying.

Experience

Essential

Significant post state registration and evidence of continuing professional development. Experience in all aspects of work pertaining to running the Clinical Biochemistry department. Ability to develop and write policies and procedures ( Standard Operating Procedures), relating to specialty section. Experience in supervising more junior staff in a professional and competent manner.

Evidence of work in developing or assisting the development of assays and techniques appropriate to Clinical Biochemistry
