Process Analytical Technology (PAT) Team Member

We are currently recruiting a PAT Scientist to join our Drug Substance Development (DSD) team at GSK Stevenage R&D site.

The role would be at Grade 8 (senior scientist) dependent upon experience.


As a PAT Scientist, you will use your analytical scientific knowledge and expertise to support drug substance development activities in R&D.

Your focus will be to enhance process understanding and improve process control and product quality by collaborating closely with chemists, engineers and materials scientists on matrix project teams.

Your responsibilities will include the implementation and use of PAT tools across laboratory and pilot plant; training team members to use these tools; assessing new technologies; which help in developing and optimising pharmaceutical unit operations.

You should be a team player; with a hands-on, responsible, and compliant approach to quality, safety and EHS. You should be able to work with cross-functional teams, be self-motivated and have good communication skills.

In this role you will

  • Demonstrate a sound practical understanding of relevant spectroscopic and analytical techniques, processes and procedures used in PAT.
  • Implement PAT technology on projects including planning, designing, and executing work/experimental programmes to increase fundamental process understanding, accelerate development, and delivery of more robust processes.
  • Evaluate new PAT technologies and maintain existing PAT technologies through their lifecycle.
  • Integrate PAT technologies with other Process Analytics techniques, methods, and simulations (e.g. kinetics, chemometrics, materials sciences) to innovate Pharmaceutical Development and Manufacturing. Use this knowledge to identify potential future opportunities.
  • Participate in technology transfer activities, as appropriate, to GSK manufacturing partners.
  • Author or contribute to scientific documentation.
  • Comply with applicable Data Integrity, Quality, cGMP (current Good Manufacturing Practice) and regulatory requirements in all aspects of work.
  • Fully embrace all aspects of safety when working in the laboratory.

Basic Qualifications & Skills:

We are looking for professionals with these required skills to achieve our goals:

  • MSc or PhD degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry or Pharmaceutical Sciences (or related discipline).
  • Sound understanding on PAT tools such as UV/Vis, midIR, Raman, NIR spectroscopy, Particle Sizer
  • Motivated and interested in developing practical experience of techniques that enhance process understanding in the pharmaceutical industry.

Preferred Qualifications & Skills:

Please note the following skills are not necessary, just preferred, if you do not have them, please still apply:

  • Previous experience of working in a multi-functional team.
  • Direct laboratory experience in the pharmaceutical industry, or related sector.
  • A background in crystallization or chemical synthesis is beneficial but not essential.
