Stevenage, Hertfordshire, United Kingdom Plurify Full time

We are hiring Join us as we shape the future of stem cell therapies

Plurify is a very early-stage and rapidly progressing biotech start-up, shaping the future of stem cell therapies. We are developing cutting-edge platform technologies for the scalable, targeted removal of unwanted residual cells that arise during stem cell therapy manufacture. This is a major bottleneck in the industry today and the potential for Plurify to unlock new curative cell therapies is huge. We have recently secured multiple Innovate UK grants and received substantial backing from private investors, allowing us to grow our team over the coming years.

The Opportunity:

We are seeking a passionate and enthusiastic Scientist to join our three experienced scientific co-founders and play a pivotal role in our R&D journey. You will become an integral part of our scientific team, provide essential technical support in the lab, lead existing R&D projects and contribute to the initiation of new ones.

At Plurify, we believe that ownership and trust foster excellence. That's why we have flexible working arrangements and encourage each other to explore their own ideas - as long as they could add value to our vision and mission.

As a very early-stage company, Plurify offers never-ending opportunities to learn new skills and take on additional responsibilities over time, fostering both personal and professional growth.

Key responsibilities:

  • Design and Lead Experiments: Design and lead experiments for various work packages.
  • Stay Current with Research: Stay up to date with published work in relevant fields.
  • Generate High-Quality data: Perform experiments to optimise and innovate our technology in various settings.
  • Perform Data Analysis: Analyse experimental data to derive meaningful insights and guide subsequent research activities.
  • Manage Laboratory Inventory and Stocks: Track inventory and order necessary materials in a timely manner. Ensure the laboratory is well-stocked with essential reagents and materials (e.g., autoclaving tips, preparing LB agarose plates, aliquoting materials).
  • Lead Cloning and Construct Manufacturing: Take a proactive role in cloning and construct manufacturing, diligently following best laboratory practices and SOPs.
  • Document and Communicate Results: Accurately write up experimental results in a timely fashion and communicate them to the team.
  • Be Flexible: Acquire new skills as the company grows and be open to taking on new tasks and challenges as our priorities and scope inevitably change.
  • Enjoy the Process: Have fun and be positive while doing great science

Essential qualifications and experience:

  • BSc or Masters degree in molecular biology, biotechnology, synthetic biology or related field.
  • PhD in molecular biology, biotechnology, synthetic biology or related field.
  • Experience with molecular biology techniques, including cloning techniques, bacterial transformation, nucleic acid preparation, gel electrophoresis etc.
  • Experience with cell transfection using various methods.
  • Experience with mammalian cell culture.
  • Experience with flow cytometry, fluorescence microscopy, luciferase assays, or all three.
  • Track record of diligent ELN practices.

Desired experience that would prioritise your application

  • Experience with Oxford Nanopore and other types of next-generation sequencing.
  • Experience with Golden Gate and Gibson cloning methods.
  • Experience with RT-qPCR.
  • Track record of delivering high-quality scientific data and insights.
  • Experience with iPSC and differentiation protocols.
  • Industry experience, ideally in a start-up environment.
  • Experience with bioinformatics / data science and scripting.

Mindset that fits with Plurify's culture

  • Self-Driver: Demonstrate consistent self-discipline to maintain productivity and overcome obstacles, in the lab as in life..
  • Collaborative Spirit: Work collaboratively and openly with team members, valuing diverse perspectives and leveraging collective expertise to drive innovation.
  • Initiative and Time Management: Be proactive and effectively manage your time to meet deadlines and achieve research goals.
  • Resilient and Open-Minded: Understand that cutting-edge scientific work is inherently challenging and prone to setbacks. A negative result is only bad if we fail to learn from it.
  • Innovative and Agile Research: Always strive to design and execute 'killer' experiments that can robustly and quickly test your hypotheses. Be willing to pivot from ideas or projects when well-controlled experiments do not yield expected results.
  • Balance Exploration and Focus: Encourage the exploration of new ideas while delivering core research programs.

Benefits we are offering

  • Competitive Salary: We offer salaries that match UK industry standards, tailored to your expertise and experience.
  • Share Options Plan: Eligible employees may participate in a share options plan, providing a stake in the company's growth and success. As one of our first employees, this may prove significant over the long term.
  • Trust and Flexibility: We value results and real progress. Enjoy the flexibility to manage your own time and balance your work life like an adult.
  • Dynamic Startup Environment: Join a small and motivated team, offering significant opportunities to influence the company's direction and grow your skill set.
  • On-Site Gym and Sports Facilities: Maintain your health and wellness with access to our comprehensive gym and sports facilities, available to our team.
  • State-of-the-Art Facilities and Friendly Community: Our workplace features state-of-the-art laboratories situated at Stevenage Bioscience Catalyst on the campus of GSK. The environment is comfortable and includes a full-service cafeteria, ample free parking, and beautifully maintained green spaces. Enjoy regular social events with the other biotech companies as well as our own internal team building.
  • Complimentary Coffee: Unlimited access to premium coffee throughout the day to keep you energised and focused.
  • Pension Plan with Employer Match: Contribute to your pension, with a matching component from the employer to boost your retirement savings.

If this sounds like a role for you, please reach out to us by email ) with your CV and a cover letter.

At Plurify we are all progressive global citizens striving to create a better future. We know that the best solutions arise from an integration of perspectives and are committed to fostering an engaging and inclusive environment of scientific excellence that respects and values the diversity of each individual. We encourage applications from all backgrounds and are committed to hiring processes that are free from biases. We offer equal opportunities to all applicants and support the career advancement of our team members, irrespective of their identity or background.

We look forward to meeting you
