The Chief Nursing Information Officer (CNIO) role combines knowledge of patient care, informatics, technology and change management to effectively address the information and knowledge needs of healthcare professionals and patients to promote safe, effective, and efficient use of Digital Health solutions in clinical settings with the ultimate aim of improving patient outcomes.

The post holder will act as a change agent working with nursing and clinical leadership teams in the identification, development, planning, implementation, and measurement of initiatives that deliver the digital strategy to support quality patient care and professional practice

The role will provide clinical informatics leadership and help drive understanding and adoption of digital health systems and the use of data within our nursing and allied health professional workforce.


The CNIO will work at a strategic level bringing nursing experience and engaging with key stakeholders to ensure patient and clinical involvement and clinical safety in the planning, development, delivery and evaluation of systems and services such as the Electronic Patient Record, Electronic Prescribing and Medicines Administration system and other Digital Health solutions.


The CNIO will challenge current practice, promote innovation and champion the development of a clinically appropriate information culture across the organisation.

The role will identify the opportunities for standardisation and improvement of digital health solutions and clinical decision support and champion the role of clinical informatics as an enabler of safe and effective care.


They will promote the effective use of data for nursing outcomes, knowledge and technology to support quality improvements and nursing informatics research, which will benefit users of our services in their recovery and support carers.


The post holder will work collaboratively with the trust informatics team and network externally keeping up to date on best practice and innovation and work with national partners such as NHS Digital, so they are informed of the national direction of nursing informatics leadership.

As a member of the CNIO national network this will provide networking and learning opportunities from other strategic nursing informatics leaders.


The CNIO will also be a lead voice in the coordination of clinical safety reviews for healthcare technologies, ensuring with the Clinical Safety Officers that effective clinical risk management is conducted.


The CNIO is a translator and the main point of liaison for nursing/AHP informatics, sharing the strategic vision for how clinically focused, evidenced based digital workflows will enhance clinical care and patient safety.

  • Reduce unwarranted variation
  • Lead the nursing and AHP workforce in developing new ways of working with digital health solutions. This may require negotiation, process mapping and implementation of changes in clinical practice whilst ensuring patient safety is maintained and improvements are communicated.
