Head of Strategic Sourcing

This role sits at the heart of delivering our 'Winning in Food' corporate strategy.

As a business we have ambitious plans to delight customers by delivering transformation in our proposition, cost base reductions & an ambitious Plan for Better agenda.


Managing a talented team of colleagues from management consultancy, industry and retail backgrounds, to support our trading teams in delivering their strategic goals, the Head of Strategic Sourcing will partner with senior leaders across the Food Business to design and plan strategic supplier partnerships which deliver the Food Commercial outcomes (volume growth, profit, plan for better and surety of supply) with sustainable and transparent agreements.

With the support of Strategic Sourcing Managers and wider cross functional teams you are responsible for planning and delivering 3 programmes:

  • Annual Supplier Plans with branded suppliers.
  • Everyday Wins (tactical efficiency initiatives) of our own brand suppliers.
  • Value Chain Analysis (structural supplier resets to deliver our strategic outcomes)
You will be a driven leader, able to demonstrate strong influencing and judgement

Relevant experience preferred:
business partnering, programme management, negotiation, contract management, commodity management and leadership of a team/ programme.

Breaking down the Head of Strategic Sourcing:
Programme Management

Work with Food Commercial Leadership to plan and prioritise the strategic sourcing programmes.

Horizon scanning of sourcing opportunities to unlock incremental opportunity.

Regular reporting on progress vs. plan, including presenting to Senior Leadership teams at

Project Management

Own the Supplier Planning and Everyday Wins process and resourcing requirements.


Lead and champion Sainsbury's value chain analysis process and support your team in developing the optimised sourcing strategy that delivers our strategic objectives.

Training and coaching

Lead a team of Strategic Sourcing Managers team.

  • Build training materials for the direct and cross functional teams supporting you.
  • Continuous coaching of our pool of Sourcing Managers
  • Build sources of industry contacts and knowledge
  • Promote an open feedback culture to drive performance.

Stakeholder Management:

  • Build relationships with diverse sets of stakeholders and influence at senior levels.
  • Facilitate difficult cross functional decisions using data and your strong influencing.
  • Be available, approachable and recognised as an expert in Strategic Sourcing
  • Gather and provide regular feedback to continually learn and improve performance edge.

What decisions I can make including budget

  • Design the Strategic Sourcing Programme
  • Recommend Strategic Sourcing decisions to Buying teams.
  • Select third party service providers to support projects such as gaining industry best practice or tools to do the job more productively
  • Recruitment
  • Responsible for meeting labour and nonlabour annual budgets

Directly or indirectly manages

  • Directly manages up to 7 x Strategic Sourcing Managers
