Summary purpose - what you will be achieving.


As a key member of the Academy's close-knit policy team, the policy officer will support the implementation of a major policy project on child health to maximise its impact across government, NHS, research funders and other relevant targets.

This includes potential follow-up work to further explore policy priorities in child health.

The policy officer will also support our response to emerging policy priorities, including those related to the regulation, governance and implementation of health and social care research.

The policy officer will have the opportunity to support wider activities across the policy team associated with delivering our strategic challenge to 'influence policy and practice to improve the lives of patients, the public and communities'.


About the role - what you will be doing.
As a policy officer you will have the opportunity to make a difference, working with a range of stakeholders to tackle some of the most significant health challenges faced by our society

You will specifically:

  • Work with the Senior Policy Manager to implement the findings of our major policy project on child health and maximise its impact with key stakeholders. This will involve developing followup plans; convening meetings, workshops or roundtables; working across the Academy to collate relevant Academy activities and drafting documents summarising our work; and liaising with the Academy's Fellowship and wider stakeholders.
  • Support the Senior Policy Manager, or other staff, to research and deliver new policy projects, including potential follow on policy priorities in child health. This will involve scoping new topics; organising meetings, workshops or roundtables; working closely with Fellows and other experts to identify and analyse key policy issues; gathering and analysing data and expert opinion; and drafting reports.
  • Maintain an excellent understanding of the policy landscape by monitoring developments and key policy issues. Identifying and researching potential new areas of policy work.
  • Develop and maintain an effective network of contacts across the sector (including our Fellows) to inform the Academy's policy activities, and to increase the impact of our work.
  • Contribute to the evaluation of the policy team's activities and the development of new ways of working particularly with respect to major policy projects.
  • Occasionally assist with projects associated with the Academy's other policy activities. This could include developing consultation responses or statements, scoping and organising workshops or roundtables, and drafting reports.
  • Occasionally supervise policy interns (PhD students).

Interviews will likely be held online the week commencing on 19 February 2024.

Requirements:

About you - what you bring to the role.

You will ideally:

  • Have strong research and analytical skills, with experience of collating evidence from different sources.
  • Have effective written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to summarise complex information concisely.
  • Effectively deliver multiple projects in parallel, managing yourself effectively to prioritise and deal with competing demands, with support from the Senior Policy Manager.
  • Easily build and maintain effective relationships with key stakeholders.
  • Thrive on working with others to produce high quality outputs and be able to harness the benefits of working in teams, including across different departments.
  • Have good IT, literacy and numeracy skills and pay attention to detail.
  • Be able to travel from timetotime (predominantly within the UK).
  • Commit to embodying the Academy's values to strive for excellence, act on evidence, behave with integrity, collaborate widely and be inclusive and actively seek diversity in all forms.
