Reporting
Assistant Headteacher with responsibility for Whole School Literacy

Whoever is appointed will:

  • Take responsibility for agreed literacy groups and interventions, as agreed with the HOD (English) by:
  • Co-ordinating schemes of work and associated resources, ensuring up to date schemes of work are in place and completing the M&R process for literacy lessons
  • Providing all appropriate staff with necessary information and resources to teach these schemes effectively
  • Leading the development of appropriate new courses and syllabi and managing the introduction and delivery of these new courses
  • Tracking and analysing student progress
  • Identifying underachievement of both individuals and specific groups of students and developing strategies with colleagues to address the needs of such students
  • Develop a whole school Literacy Policy and approach
  • Manage, plan and provide literacy training and support for teachers and support staff
  • Lead and manage the Literacy School Improvement Group and ensure their work has a positive impact on whole school Literacy
  • Work collaboratively with local schools and other stakeholders to develop Literacy opportunities for students and to develop best practice for staff
  • Liaise with the English department in relation to the provision of literacy support within mainstream English lessons and identification of literacy needs
  • Lead and develop debating across the school, including oversight of the Debating Club and organising debating trips as required
  • Analyse the effectiveness of literacy provisions, report on outcomes and develop strategies to improve practice in the future
  • Work collaboratively with the library to devise, run and promote literacy programmes

Whoever is appointed will need:

  • To be a wellqualified teacher with successful teaching experience and a sound knowledge and interest in current issues in the development of literacy and oracy with the ability to relate this knowledge to effective practice.
  • To be enthusiastic and positive
  • A commitment to ensuring high standards in every aspect of the literacy and debating programme
  • To be willing to research and trial new approaches and strategies to develop literacy and oracy and debating
  • To be prepared to work beyond the school day to run extracurricular activities
  • To have displayed initiative in her/his work and to work well under pressure
  • To believe in the importance of teamwork and show evidence of successful collaborative work with others and the ability to lead a team
  • To be keenly interested in children as individuals in how they learn and in a collaborative approach to learning
  • To be committed to the comprehensive ideal, to the principles and practice of mixed attainment teaching
  • A commitment to Equality, Diversity and Inclusion and the principles and practice of equal opportunities
