UCH T&A - Theatre Circulating Assistant (Band 3)

University College Hospital is a major Teaching Hospital and Research Centre with state of the art facilities. Our operating theatre is a busy and dynamic environment setting the benchmark for clinical excellence.


We have 27 operating rooms under UCH Theatres & Anaesthesia DIvision which covers different specialities ranging from General surgery, Trauma Orthopaedics, Bariatrics and upper GI surgery, Colorectal, Gynaecology, Urology, Oncology, Paediatrics, ENT, Maxillo Facial, Vascular and Plastic/ Breast surgery and Robotic Surgery.


Our new operating theatre complex in Grafton Way Building is now open which caters to elective orthopaedic and ENT surgeries.

Further career opportunities will be available with the opening of our Proton Beam Therapy centre.


Working as a Theatre Circulating Assistant you will be required to function effectively as a member of the peri-operative team to ensure the provision of an efficient and high quality surgical service.


Who we're looking for:

  • Perioperative NVQ Level
  • Previous experience as an Operating Theatre Support Worker
  • Confident and empathetic manner
  • A natural people person
  • Patient/customer facing experience
  • Working as part of a team


Opportunities are available to rotate in all areas within the Division areas such as Main Theatres, Day Surgery Unit, Macmillan Cancer Centre, Grafton Way Building and EGA Obstetric Theatres with the support of a dedicated Senior Clinical Practice Facilitator.

Successful applicants will be invited to attend Virtual interviews via MS Teams.

If you're successful at the interviews, you will then be asked to attend the assessment centre which will involve completing a drug calculations test, virtual reality clinical scenario-based assessment, and ID checks.

Other duties and responsibilities include:

  • Contribute to the safe use of medical devices and supplementary items used in the perioperative environment.
  • Assist in preparing patients and equipment for transfer and movement within the perioperative environment.
  • Assist in positioning patients for clinical procedures within the perioperative environment
  • Assist in the support and monitoring of patients within the perioperative care environment
  • Assist in the measurement and recording of patients' body fluid output, blood loss and wound drainage during the perioperative phase
  • Carry out delegated activities to assist the registered practitioner in the assessment, planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of perioperative patient care
  • Assist in the preparation and organisation of equipment and instrumentation for clinical procedures in a nonscrubbed surgical role
  • Assist in the provision, monitoring and recording of surgical instrumentation and equipment for clinical procedures in a nonscrubbed surgical role
  • Assist in receiving, handling and dispatching clinical specimens
