The Role
A Refractory Engineering Higher Apprenticeship within Tata Steel offers an exciting training programme in varied environments and locations.

Refractories are ceramics materials that are key to the Iron and Steelmaking Processes.

They are used to line the vessels needed to transport and process the liquid metal, as well as lining the furnaces used for the many heat treatment processes required to make the final steel product.

You will work closely with colleagues in the field of Refractory Engineering within our organisation, including our suppliers and contractor partners for their installation and performance management.

It involves operating at pace, with precision and to accurate technical guidelines. Skill, expertise and dedication are critical.

Your motivation will always be to ensure our internal and external customers' requirements are achieved on time, every time.

You will be involved with all elements associated with Refractory Engineering, including health & safety, quality, customer focus and maximising value these assets deliver to the Steelmaking processes.

Whether your training as part of our Iron & Steel making process teams in the Blast Furnaces and Basic Oxygen Steelmaking Plants, or Rolling Steel in our Hot and Cold Mills, you will be part of a team that continually ensures our products and processes are world class.


The Apprenticeship
The higher apprentice programme will commence 4th September 2023.

As a Refractory Engineering higher apprentice you will:

  • Gain an understanding of the manufacturing processes in your allocated area
  • Develop your knowledge & understanding of safety, health, fire and environmental systems
  • Learn about our business people processes including training, competence and absence
  • Work with and develop various Refractory management processes
  • Gain experience in employee engagement, communications and events
  • Be influencing change to improve the processes supporting personnel on plant within the Refractories area
  • Gain an appreciation of our Quality Assurance systems
  • Communicate and work with other internal departments
  • Involvement and management of project work when required
  • Seek out continuous improvement opportunities
Year - As a Paid Tata Higher Apprentice, you will:

  • Study a Higher Education Qualification at Level
  • Start a Level 4 NVQ Diploma
  • Complete Core Tata Competencies
  • Undertake Department & Role Specific Training

Year - In your second year you will:

  • Complete the Level 4 Qualification
  • Complete the Level 4 NVQ
  • Undertake further on job and off job training to be competent in your specific role
To be considered for our Refractory Engineering Higher Apprenticeship Programme you will need 5 GCSEs or equivalent (including English Language, Maths and Science) at Grades A* - C or level - 9

And

2 x A levels (preferably in Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths or Business) at C Grade or above.

We are also looking for applicants to have the following:

  • Excellent communication skills both written and oral.
  • Good presentation and project management skills
  • Ability to work alone and as part of a team with a flexible and adaptable approach.
  • Good IT skills to include knowledge of MS Office suite
  • Full Driving license
  • Good time management skills
  • Flexible attitude to locations and times of work.
  • Keen to gain experience in a wide range of operations.
Experience within Chemical, Engineering, Manufacturing or other Industrial work environment would be advantageous.
