London, Greater London, United Kingdom TPP Recruitment Full time

General practice needs to hear your voice

  • Do you have a real interest in how general practice should deliver care, now and in the future?
  • Could you offer constructive challenge and potentially help shape ideas into solutions?
  • Can you be part of a team, working in partnership with GPs?
If so, we would love to talk to you.

The Royal College of General Practitioners was the first royal medical college to set up a patient and carer group, to give a different perspective to its work.

Everyone has a general practice, and it's essential that patients and carers can give their views about key issues such as how GPs are trained, the different ways to get an appointment, how clinical care is given and how to help tackle major challenges like health inequalities.

The Group meets mainly virtually, up to six times a year, for about two hours. There may be opportunities for you to attend other meetings to provide a lay perspective.

We're keen to recruit people whose voices aren't often heard - people with disabilities, younger people, people from different ethnic backgrounds or the LGBTQIA+ community.

No previous experience of committee working is needed.

Role purpose

To contribute a patient or carer perspective to the College by active membership of the PCPG and involvement in other College activities and committees as appropriate.

Dimensions of the role

  • Attend up to 6 PCPG meetings per year (meetings last approximately 2 hours). The meetings are usually virtual, except for one inperson meeting a year in London.
  • Suggest agenda items for meetings of the PCPG.
  • In addition to the 6 meetings per year, there may also be opportunities to take part in other College committee meetings, short life working groups, consultations, and surveys where applicable. (In total, this could be up to 10 days per annum depending on the frequency of the meetings at which you may represent the PCPG).
  • Proactively contribute to the College's strategic, campaigning and policy priorities.
  • Respond to public consultations from NHS England and other government departments and agencies at the request of the College.
  • Input into RCGP policy papers and other documents.
  • Input and contribute to the PCPG's involvement at the RCGP Annual Conference where necessary, or other College events.
  • Membership (as a PCPG representative) of a limited number of College committees or working groups which may be external to the College. You would be expected to submit a short, written report on any meetings attended on behalf of the PCPG to every meeting.

Relevant knowledge, skills and experience

  • Able to contribute both orally and in writing on primary healthcare topics in the UK generally, with particular reference to GP services and their development.
  • Commitment to dedicate the necessary time to the tasks assigned by the Committee
  • Have an interest in healthcare structures and issues in the UK and the changes that are currently underway or planned.
  • Empathise with the work and aims of the Collegeand wish to contribute to its policies.
  • Able to assimilate information relating to relevant issues.
  • Ability to take into consideration the views of other Committee members and a diverse range of opinions.
  • Able to work as a team member with other PCPG members, both lay and medical.
  • The confidence and ability to provide constructive challenge to College staff and members.
  • Access to existing patient experience and involvement networks, or the ability to identify them.
  • Commitment to the College's policies on equality, diversity and inclusion.
