London, Greater London, United Kingdom Royal College of Psychiatrists Full time

The National Collaborating Centre for Mental Health (NCCMH) and College Centre for Quality Improvement (CCQI) are seeking two Patient Representative to join the Net-Zero Mental Health Care Project as a College Worker.

The successful applicants will have lived experience of mental health services preferably within the last 5 years and an interest in Net Zero Mental health Services.

Net Zero Mental Health Care Project:

The National Collaborating Centre for Mental Health (NCCMH) and the College Centre for Quality Improvement (CCQI) at the Royal College of Psychiatrists (RCPsych) are developing a report and educational resources on delivering net zero mental health care.

This is to ensure that psychiatrists, psychologists, mental health nurses, and all other staff involved in delivering mental health care, have access to clear evidence, resources and support to enable them to understand and deliver net zero mental health care.

This work will be supported by NHS England and Greener NHS.

The Expert Reference Group:

The NCCMH and CCQI are convening an expert reference group (ERG) that reflects the broad scope of mental health care and will include the successful applicants as patient and carer representatives

The ERG will:
- inform and guide the approach to the development of the report
- comment on draft versions of the written report as requested
- provide appropriate challenge and assurance to the work programme delivery
- provide support for the project as a whole.

  • The project began in January 2023 and will run for 10 months, with submission of the report due to take place in November 2023.We require the two patient representatives to give sufficient weight to the ERG and to get a breadth of experience. The expertise from individuals with recent lived experience of inpatient mental health services will be crucial to the development, progress and successful delivery of this project.
Ideally the patient representatives will have experience of net-zero or low carbon strategies used in health care.

They will use this experience to inform the development of a comprehensive report and educational resources on delivering net zero mental health care, which will involve:

- a call for evidence on net zero mental health care
- producing a carbon footprint of mental health care in England and identifying carbon 'hotspots'
- developing recommended actions for organisations and clinicians
- designing webinars and training videos.

Time commitment:

Both representatives will be required to attend approximately three ERG meetings in total over the lifetime of the 10-month project.

The ERG meetings will be two hours and will be hosted virtually via MS Teams on the following dates:

  • Thursday 20 April am
  • Thursday 20 July pm
  • Wednesday 4 October pm
  • The Patient Representatives must have access to their own electrical equipment to attend meetings and Wi-Fi connection.
RCPsych has developed a high media profile and is a leading organisation in terms of equality and diversity. It was a recent winner of Charity of the Year at the European Diversity Awards.

  • This is an excellent opportunity for patients to contribute their perspectives on important mental health issues and be part of our ongoing strategy and communications development
