The successful candidate will work withbioinformaticians and wet lab scientists within the SampleTechnology team to develop tools and workflows for gDNA cDNA anddRNA sequencing and applications. Embedded in the Sample TechnologyBioinformatics team. The job holder will design and implement newbioinformatics workflows for nanopore sequencing supportexperimental method development and help bring research andproofofconcept work toproducts.

Responsibilitiesinclude:

  • Workingindependently and collaboratively on the development of pipelinesfor analysis of applications of gDNA cDNA and direct RNA sequencingusing ONTs nanopore sensing platform
  • Workingwith laboratorybased scientists to help them plan and refineexperiments interpreting the data generated in the appropriatebiological context and to reporting the results clearly.Troubleshooting new experimental methods including identifyingpossible technical factors that influence data quality.
  • Working crossfunctionally with other bioinformaticsfunctions at ONT to help bring research and proofofconcept work toproducts.
  • Supporting our internal and customerfacing teams by providing bestpractice advice on analysis ofnanopore data.
  • Reporting analysis resultsclearly in form of technical documentation presentations andexplainers meant for broader scientific audience. They may berelied upon to present results to externalcustomers.

What WereLooking For...

  • Extensive practical experience of handling and analysinglarge nextgeneration sequencing data sets. Youll also have ahistory of involvement in the whole experimental process from theinitial experimental concept to execution analysis and presentationresults addressing important biological questions.
  • Experience with developing bioinformatic pipelines toanswer specific biological questions. You have broad knowledge andexperience in bioinformatics and understanding of the range andlimitations of existing tools.
  • Substantialexperience with scripting languages (e.g. python R) workflowmanagement system (e.g. NextFlow Snakemake) and softwaredevelopment practices (e.g. version control).
  • In addition you can solve problems collaboratively andindependently and consider yourself someone with high standards butwho is able to prioritise and shift focus onto other projects whenrequired.
  • You will have a PhD in a BiologicalScience or Computer Science with a substantial bioinformaticscomponent or equivalent experience. Further experience within thebiotechnology industry (or a postdoc) involving sequencing dataanalysis would be anasset.

Additionalskills experience and knowledge in the following areas are alsodesirable:

  • Practical experience with different types long readsequencing data (e.g. genomic DNA cDNA single cell)
  • Proven track record to successfully deliver projectsindependently and as a member of a team.
  • Experience publishing or releasing your own NGS tools orworkflows.
  • Handson wet lab experience or atrack record of interaction with wet lab scientists ideallyinvolving sample and library preparation for NGS.
  • Excellent scientific literacy and scientific writingskills.
  • Experience with presenting scientificresults to varied scientific audience in different formats (e.g.reports publications presentations).
  • Experience supervising junior team members inbioinformatic analyses.
  • Large generalbiological knowledge including molecular biology genomics andtranscriptomics.
