The paediatric department based at Morriston hospital are looking to appoint two senior clinical fellows to join their multi disciplinary team to commence as soon as possible on a permanent basis.

The appointee will share in the ward duties on Oakwood wards and the Paediatric Admission Unit, as well as attending to referrals from other wards. At present the team consists of 12 SHOs, 1 Associate Specialist, 1 Specialty Doctor and 6 SpRs. The Unit has 7 senior Clinical Nurse Specialists (Epilepsy, CF, Asthma, Nutrition, Diabetes, Safeguarding). The medical and nursing team work together to deliver care on the inpatient Unit and in outpatients.

Specific duties will include clerking and follow-on care of children,presentation of cases at meetings and ward rounds, involvement in outpatient paediatric clinics, and the teaching programme of the Unit. The appointee will acquire skills in paediatric acute and emergency care, HDU care and a broad range of paediatric subspecialty care. They will interact with the paediatric surgical teams (Burns and Plastics plus some tertiary surgical specialties) and support medical, surgical, nursing and allied professional team in delivering care to children.

Main duties of the job

The Paediatric Inpatient Services in Swansea are on the Morriston Hospital site, the posts are based at Morriston Hospital.

We wish to appoint two Senior Clinical Fellows to our general paediatric service. The successful applicants will join a team of 11 middle grade (Tier 2) paediatricians to work together to deliver and develop general paediatric services in SBU Health Board and support their tier 1 colleagues. They are expected to participate in the tier 2 middle grade resident on call rota (1:10 rota with prospective cover) . In addition to this, there will be specific responsibilities in relation to the Paediatric Assessment Unit, the Outpatient Department, liaison with the Accident & Emergency Department and other specialties.

Situated in South Wales, the area surrounding the Health Board boasts beautiful scenery, affordable housing, excellent schools and higher education, good road and rail links to London (2 1/2 hours). We are conveniently situated on the M4 corridor.

This post is suitable for doctors who wish to pursue a career in paediatrics and those who are preparing for MRCPCH or equivalent. The post is a full time appointment, but applications from doctors wishing to work on a part-time basis will also be welcomed.

Although this is not a recognised training post the successful candidate will have opportunity to attend teaching and training and participate in audit and quality improvement projects where possible in line with service needs.

The Fellow will provide a clinical service in conjunction with colleagues & under the direction of a Consultant, which will include the responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of childhood illness. The appointee will be expected to;- Participate fully in the supervision and care of paediatric inpatients.- Engage in departmental audit and governance programmes, to aid indevelopment of clinical service guidelines- Advise clinicians in hospital and primary care regarding paediatricmatters- Support colleagues in their clinical work and the above activities.- Participate in the paediatric departmental teaching programme postgraduate, undergraduate and multi-disciplinary- Undertake the administrative duties associated with patient care andthe administration of the department- Deputise for absent colleagues and in exceptional unforeseencircumstances may have to perform additional duties to ensure thesafe running of the department (for additional remuneration or time off in lieu of payment).
