The Community Dental Service (CDS) in Swansea Bay University Health Board (SBUHB) are inviting applications from self-motivated, dedicated and enthusiastic dental therapists. The successful post holder will be joining a dynamic CDS team. Duties will include providing care in CDS clinics , supporting the Paediatric General Anaesthetic Triage (GAT) pathway and during domiciliary dental visits in various sites.

This post is based in Central Clinic in Swansea but the post holder may be required to operate in a range of locations across Swansea, Neath, Port Talbot. The main duties are to provide dental care for the vulnerable adults and children, including patients with special care requirements, seen by the CDS department. Duties will include providing care in CDS clinics, during domiciliary dental visits and driving to various other sites to provide care.

Main duties of the job
  • The post holder is expected to manage and take responsibility for a dental clinic in the absence of a Dental Officer.
  • To provide clinical advice in relation to oral health care, to all eligible patients within the prescribed range of duties for a therapist. This includes treatment of all eligible vulnerable people referred to the CDS of all ages and backgrounds, including those with special care requirements including learning disabilities, disproportionate dental anxiety, medical problems, mental health problems, physical disabilities.
  • To accurately comprehend and adhere to a Dental Officer's written prescription for each patient when required and to work autonomously in assessing the individual patient's needs and compliance and how to best effect treatment.
  • To provide dental care commensurate with the grade and within the General Dental Council Dental Therapist remit for the vulnerable people seen by the CDS in fixed clinics, during domiciliary visits, and various other sites, ensuring that the highest standards of clinical care are provided.
  • To analyse, assess clinical situations and chose specific treatments when needed and liaise with other dental officers and therapists when necessary.
  • To work with other CDS dental officers, therapists and nurses to ensure a high standard of patient care within the department.
  • To take responsibility for the direction and supervision of the work of a CDS Dental Nurse during the provision of daily duties.
About us The SBU CDS team comprises of a Clinical Lead, Consultant in Special Care Dentistry, Specialists in Paediatric Dentistry, Senior Dental officers, Dental Officers, Dental Therapists, Senior Dental Nurse and Dental Nurses that provide dental care for vulnerable adults and children, including patients with special care requirements. Job description Job responsibilities You will work closely with the senior management team, provide direct access care and work in collaboration with the wider clinical team to ensure a high quality of care is provided across the service, to the most vulnerable patient groups including physical disabilities, learning difficulties, mental health problems, medically compromised, psycho geriatric conditions, dental phobias, homeless and those with language, behavioural and social barriers.

The CDS is involved in National Epidemiology surveys, the elderly care home programme and also manages SBUHB Designed to Smile, Gwen am Byth and Transformation Programmes.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply. Person Specification Qualifications Essential
  • Registration with the General Dental Council as a Dental Therapist
  • Proven maintenance of post-graduate continuing professional development
Desirable
  • Additional qualifications such as skills in conscious sedation, taking radiographs or the removal of sutures
  • ECDL or equivalent
Experience Essential
  • Previous experience of working as a dental therapist
  • Previous training and experience in treating patients with special care requirements
Desirable
  • Experience of dental therapy practice in a Community Dental Service or Hospital
Knowledge and skills Essential
  • Clinically proficient in dentistry as a dental therapist
  • Use of English language to a high level as an integral part of excellent, effective written and verbal communication.
  • ICT skills to include Outlook, Windows, Word and Excel.
Desirable
  • Ability to overcome language and communication barriers
  • Knowledge of the CDS and its role, General Dental Practice and Hospital Service
