Ilford, Greater London, United Kingdom Barking Havering and Redbridge Univ Hospitals NHS Trust Full time
This post offers extensive clinical experience in Respiratory Medicine and Lung cancer.

It would be suitable for a IMT3/ST3 trainee in General Medicine planning to pursue a career in Respiratory Medicine, General/Acute Medicine, or Infectious diseases (ID).

The post is initially for a one-year period with the option of extending further if mutually agreeable.

This post will provide an excellent opportunity to gain experience in Respiratory Medicine including Lung cancer, Pleural disease, Thoracic ultrasound, Bronchoscopy and EBUS.

The National optimal pathway is being introduced to meet the waiting time targets as set out in the Independent Cancer Taskforce report.

In the face of increased referrals and lower conversion rates, a triage process is being introduced to reduce the cost whilst supporting the drive to improve early diagnostic rates.

This post holder will be actively engaged in this triage process under consultant supervision.

This post is based in the Chest Clinic at King George Hospital.

There is a respiratory ward at the King George site providing specialist respiratory input including Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) and Non-Invasive Ventilation (NIV).

In addition to the general respiratory clinics, the chest clinic provides specialist clinics in Lung cancer, Sleep and Ventilation, Tuberculosis, Long Covid, and a pleural procedures clinic.

There is a Pulmonary function laboratory and an endoscopy suite for Bronchoscopy and EBUS procedures.

The post holder will support the delivery of comprehensive respiratory care for patients referred to the Respiratory unit, provide in-reach to the Medical Assessment Unit, perform Bronchoscopy and EBUS and undertake outpatient clinics.

The key duties and responsibilities of the post will be:

  • Clinical responsibility for the proper functioning of the Respiratory Unit, including ward round, and out-patient clinics.
  • Perform practical procedures including Bronchoscopy, EBUS, Thoracic Ultrasounds and Thoracocentesis with appropriate supervision as needed.
  • Triage lung cancer outpatient referrals under the supervision of a consultant.
  • Actively participate in the Lung cancer Multidisciplinary Meetings.
  • Participate in undergraduate and postgraduate education programme, including supervision of junior medical staff, and undergraduate medical students, and take an active part in local and regional educational programmes.
  • Develop standards, procedures and systems that are safe, high quality and efficient patient care.
  • Develop clinical guidelines/community protocols and best practice for the management of a wide range of acute medical presentations /admissions.
  • Ensure robust risk management and governance arrangements are in place on respiratory wards. You will be supported by our clinical governance lead.
  • Participate in relevant audit and quality assurance processes, including reviews of manpower requirements.
  • Assist in training and supervision of medical trainees in all procedures.

Under the leadership of our Chair Jacqui Smith and Matthew Trainer, our Chief Executive, we provide care for the residents of three of the most diverse London boroughs.

More than half of our 7,500 strong workforce are from black, Asian and minority ethnic groups and most live in Barking and Dagenham, Havering and Redbridge.

We also provide healthcare services to people in south west Essex, and specialist neurosciences services to the whole of the county.

Our services include all the major specialties of large acute hospitals, operating from two main sites - King George Hospital in Goodmayes and Queen's Hospital in Romford.

We also provide outpatient services at Brentwood Community Hospital, Barking Hospital, Loxford Polyclinic, and Harold Wood Polyclinic. We have two of the busiest emergency departments in London.

As we recover from Covid-19, we're proud to be leading the way nationally in reducing the time our patients wait to get the treatment they need.

The pandemic provided the drive for our teams to innovate and change.

We know we have more work to do to improve waiting times for urgent and emergency care, and our performance against the four-hour emergency access standard remains challenged, in comparison to many other London trusts.

We are particularly proud of our regional Neurosciences Centre; Radiotherapy Centre; Hyper Acute Stroke Unit; and dedicated breast care service at King George Hospital.

We're also pleased to be part of the NEL Cancer Alliance.
