University Biomedical Services (UBS) is a Division charged with the management and operation of all Home Office Designated facilities on behalf of the University We aim to meet the highest standards both in animal welfare, and in the science conducted.

UBS hosts the Animal Welfare and Ethical Review Body (AWERB); supports the Establishment Licence Holder (ELH) and other Named Persons with legal responsibilities; manages all the Home Office licences and licence related processes; manages the operations, finances and administration of all the animal facilities (currently 10).

including all support staff (+150 staff in total); has responsibility for capital development and replacement programmes; provides the level of technical support required by the scientists and overall ensures that the animal facilities and the Training Centre run efficiently and effectively, supportive of biomedical research in the University.


The role holder will be part of the senior management team working most closely with the Director for Governance and Welfare to deliver the effective running of the UBS licensing systems and processes.

This will include liaison with the Home Office and others to ensure that the University remains up to date with changes to and compliance with all relevant legislation but with particular emphasis on the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986 (ASPA) to facilitate the efficient delivery of high quality research at the University.


The role holder and their team will assist in providing high level input designed to ensure the effective running of the governance systems and processes and for reviewing and updating them, where necessary.


The role holder will oversee the Licence Management team and will work with UBS Named Persons, other UBS staff and members of AWERB to deliver systems, processes, advice and support to licence holders undertaking regulated and non-regulated procedures.
