WPL are excited to have an opening for a Materials Management Assistant.


The Materials Management Team based at UHS are responsible for the stock controlling and ordering of consumable products across over 100 requisition points.

We use several systems to monitor our orders and manage the stock we control.

Wessex NHS Procurement Ltd is a joint venture subsidiary of University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust and Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

Main responsibilities:

  • To work as part of a team to provide an efficient and reliable Materials Management Service throughout the Trust by setting up and maintaining ward/department stock profiles (including high value "non-stock" items procured directly from Suppliers), to meet clinical requirements.
  • To produce and analyse reports in order to recommend and persuade user departments to follow Trust initiatives such as Standardisation and Rationalisation programs.
  • Working under own initiative, responsible for all aspects of the day-to-day Materials Management operation for specifically allocated wards/departments.
  • Coordinate own workload to undertake counts to replenish stock to previously agreed levels using bar code data capture technology. Meeting ordering and delivery deadlines for consumables in order for patient care to be maintained by medical staff.
  • Assessing clinical requirements for urgent requests (i.e., procedural urgency/quality/price/supply route etc.) and implement effective ordering and distribution mechanisms.
  • Download information to the computerised materials management system.

What we are looking for:

  • Understanding Materials Management principles and process including stock control, ordering, invoicing and customer care skills, acquired through NVQ level 3 or foundation stage of CIPS or equivalent experience in a Materials Management role.
  • Experience of being able to work under own initiative without direct supervision to achieve completion of tasks relating to own areas of responsibility.
  • Demonstrable customer care skills with examples both on the telephone and in person.
  • Have experience in previous job roles which required good organisational skills and prioritisation of workload.

Additional information:

This is a permanent role working 37.5 hours per week (Monday-Friday).


The Materials Management team is based at University Hospital Southampton and offers end users a smooth top up and stock management service.
