Occupational Therapist - Clinical Specialist

This is a fantastic opportunity to work towards becoming a clinical specialist Occupational Therapist within the highly specialized and well-established deaf mental health service based at the Barberry in Birmingham. Join our team at Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust, where we strive to improve mental health well-being and meet the needs of the people we serve each year.

We are looking for an Occupational Therapist with clinical experience in mental health and an interest in working with the deaf community. This is an 18-24 month development post that allows progression to Band 7, supporting the development of specialist skills, including BSL training.

The ideal candidate should be highly motivated and committed to completing the target activities of the development process. You will have the chance to work with inpatients and the community in the West Midlands area, focusing on service users who are deaf and have other sensory and physical health needs.

Main Responsibilities

  • Managing a caseload of service users with complex sensory, physical, and mental health needs using evidence-based and service user-centered principles.
  • Assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating interventions.
  • Collaborating with the team on evaluation, audit, and research in the specialized field.
  • Developing and delivering group and 1:1 therapeutic interventions.
  • Providing specialist assessments for inpatients and community-based service users.
  • Supervising and collaborating closely with the ward OT assistant.
  • Having a sound understanding of deaf culture and the diverse needs of the client group.
  • Holding a small community-based caseload and being able to travel within the region.
  • Working towards achieving Level 2 in BSL within the first two years of practice.
  • Being a skilled communicator and willing to prioritize BSL proficiency.

Previous experience in deaf culture is preferred, but a willingness to develop knowledge in this area is essential.

Required Qualifications, Knowledge/Skills, and Experience

  • Diploma or BSc (Hons) in Occupational Therapy.
  • Experience managing caseloads of individuals with complex needs.
  • Utilization of various assessment tools.
  • Advanced knowledge and application of current OT best practices.
  • Previous experience in mental health inpatient settings.
  • Commitment to professional development.
  • Desire and commitment to working in deaf services.
  • Previous experience in mental health community services.

Desired Qualifications, Knowledge/Skills, and Experience

  • Relevant Masters or further training in a related field.
  • Previous experience working with the deaf community.
  • BSL Level 2 proficiency or the ability to sign.
  • Lived experience of deaf services or communities.
