In this role as a Research Scientist or Research Engineer on the Finetuning team, you will contribute to enhancing language models through innovative approaches like constitutional AI. You will engage in cutting-edge research on advanced models and witness tangible improvements in performance and safety.

We expect our research scientists to be capable of conducting independent experiments and offer engineers the chance to explore their research initiatives. Hence, this role can lean towards research or engineering, depending on the candidate's background and interests.

Representative projects:
  • Help develop new fine-tuning techniques to enhance language model behavior and promote helpful, transparent, and safe outcomes
  • Explore large-scale implementation of techniques like constitutional AI and evaluate their effects on model behavior
  • Establish tools and infrastructure for efficient fine-tuning experiments on extensive language models
  • Create innovative prompts and strategies to refine and test model behaviors
  • Conduct experiments contributing to essential AI research and safety initiatives at Anthropic
You may be a good fit if you:
  • Possess substantial expertise in Python, machine learning, research engineering, or research
  • Prefer dynamic collaborative projects with clear goals focused on enhancing model behaviors
  • Are results-driven, with a preference for flexibility and impact

  • Are concerned about the influence of AI and the significance of your work
Strong candidates may also:
  • Have prior experience with advanced language model fine-tuning methods like RLHF
  • Be familiar with intricate shared codebases and RL infrastructure
  • Have a background in publishing research papers in machine learning, NLP, or AI alignment, or relevant industry experience

Logistics

Location-based hybrid policy: Currently, we require all employees to be present in one of our offices at least a quarter of the time, with some roles demanding more office presence.

US visa sponsorship: While we do sponsor visas, it may not be feasible for all roles and individuals, especially in operational positions. Nevertheless, if we extend an offer, we will make every effort to facilitate your relocation to the United States.
