The Biomedical Teaching Organisation (BMTO) is seeking to appoint a full-time Postgraduate Research Student Administrative Officer.

The Opportunity:


Within the Biomedical Sciences (BMS), the management and administration associated with students on programmes administered under the Taught Assessment Regulations (TAR) falls under the remit of the Biomedical Teaching Organisation (BMTO).

Historically students on Postgraduate Research (PGR) programmes have been positioned outside the BMTO portfolio at a Deanery level.

The purpose of this role is to integrate PGR student management and administration into the overall remit of the BMTO and deliver effective support at all stages of the PGR student life-cycle.

The post holder will lead on administrative support for Deanery of Biomedical Sciences (DBMS) Edinburgh-based postgraduate research (PGR) programmes.

They will be a main point of contact for PGR activity in the Deanery and lead and coordinate administration and logístical operations across the Biomedical Sciences postgraduate research student lifecycle with a focus on programme administration, student support, progression and assessment and examination activities within the context of University regulations and PGR codes of practice; ensuring compliance with regulations and legislation.

They will work closely with the academic BMS PGR Director to support and maintain a high-quality research student experience.

This post is open-ended, full-time (35 hours per week). You will be based in the Old Medical School at Teviot place.

Your skills and attributes for success:

  • The post holder must either have a good standard of education and several years' experience in a relevant administrative/junior management role with an understanding of the higher education context, or hold a relevant degree and have a minimum of 2-3 years' relevant experience.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and oral as well as the ability to deal sensitively with people on all levels within an organisation.
  • Welldeveloped planning and organisation skills including the ability to prioritise tasks and manage workload. Ability to work independently and as part of a team using initiative to resolve unforeseen problems and experience of working under pressure and to tight deadlines.
  • Experience of postgraduate research administration is highly desirable.
  • Strong preference will be given to those who have worked at a senior level in student administration.
