The Core Materials team are responsible for owning and continuously developing our materials knowledge and capability, through testing, and research & development. Interfacing closely with colleagues in the manufacturing and design communities we are looking for a materials engineer with experience of working in a fast-paced manufacturing environment to support the manufacture of the Rolls-Royce Nuclear Steam Raising Plant Core components.

What you will be doing:

The core materials engineer role includes:

  • Developing materials specifications for new products, materials and special processes.
  • Defining validation and verification requirements for manufacturing processes and equipment.
  • Acting as a consultant to the manufacturing teams on process compliance and non-conformance.

Key Skills and Experience:

  • Degree level qualification in a materials engineering subject.
  • Metallurgy and understanding of microstructures.
  • Manufacturing processes and their effect on material properties.
  • Experience of applying and creating specifications and standards.
  • Communication skills, including formal report writing.
  • Stakeholder management and working across key dependencies.
  • Experience in assessing manufacturing non-conformances.

Desirable Additional Skills:

  • Appreciation for product safety and experience in safety substantiation.
  • Through-life degradation, such as corrosion and effects of irradiation.
  • Ability to prioritise and take ownership of multiple work packages.
  • Ability to work with agility and deal with emergent work packages.
  • Experience working in a highly regulated industry.
