Senior Test Engineer (Heritage)

Silverstone, UK

At the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team, a group of passionate and determined people work to design, develop, manufacture and race the cars driven by seven-time World Champion Lewis Hamilton and Grand Prix winner George Russell.

Whether working in our Operations, Technical, Race or Business Support functions, we are all in and aspire to build the greatest team in the history of our sport.

Every individual plays their part. No stone is left unturned in the chase for every tenth of a second. The history of our sport is long and rich, and we are continuing our journey with renewed effort year on year. Record books remember the names of a few, but history is written by the many.

About the Role:

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Senior Test Engineer to manage our expanding programme for track running of previous cars. The nature of the events is varied but will include young driver development tests along with commercial and demonstration events for our partners. We would expect to be running between ten and fifteen of these events across a year.

The role will require a highly experienced trackside engineer with adept organisational skills to oversee a car build, plan parts usage across our expanding collection of previous cars, provide on-event engineering support, and provide driver coaching to our young drivers. The ideal candidate must demonstrate self-sufficiency and experience to be responsible for the safe running of an event.

Reporting to the Chief Engineer Trackside, the role will require close collaboration with various departments, including build, production, race engineering, race team, design, partner services and finance.

As this role will be based around event requirements, we may be able to consider part time working arrangements.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Overseeing parts supply and mileage use across our extensive fleet of F1 cars.
  • Planning car build, working with our engineering team to ensure that the events and use of common parts and equipment does not interfere with the current F1 programme.
  • Ensuring that the correct build processes are adhered to, and following and maintaining pre-existing documentation.
  • Organising test events. Liaising with circuits, our commercial team or partners, tyre suppliers and our power train division to ensure the smooth execution of events.
  • Data analysis during and after events to ensure we are operating the cars in a safe manner and that any overload damage is detected.
  • Race engineering, an ability to run simulation tools and make setup decisions based on data analysis and driver feedback.
  • Overseeing simulator and sessions with young drivers and commercial partners.
  • Coaching young drivers on techniques and understanding of tyres and car setup.
  • Overseeing the safe operation of events.

Candidate Profile:

  • The ideal candidate will likely have thrived in a high level trackside motorsport role, demonstrating a passion for team collaboration and working with racing cars and drivers.
  • Organised and initiative-taking and willing to take ownership and accountability for their work.
  • Experience of working in a fast-paced environment with continual demands and changing priorities.
  • Confident and with proven ability to execute operations and changes within a Trackside/Operational environment.
  • Ability to coordinate a team of mechanics and coach engineers from other areas of the business.
  • A practical individual who is able to work both independently and within a highly collaborative team.
  • Some travel to test events may be required.
  • Proficient with Atlas software.

Benefits:

Our riverside campus is powered by 100% renewably sourced energy and features an on-site gym and exercise studio, subsidised restaurant and on-site parking with EV chargers available.

We offer a competitive and attractive package of benefits including a generous bonus scheme, Mercedes car lease scheme, private medical cover, life assurance and 25 days holiday. We pride ourselves on our family-friendly environment, employee well-being programme and offer flexible working opportunities.

Why us:

At the heart of our performance are our people. Every member of our team has a voice and plays their part in contributing to our successes on and off the racetrack. We take pride in creating an innovative, collaborative and high-performance culture where all of our team members are respected, empowered and valued.

Through our Accelerate 25 programme, we are continuously working to make our team even more diverse and inclusive. Whatever your background, we believe that you will find working with us rewarding and enriching.
