Icon Bartholomew Intern

This internship will focus on the conservation of items from a collection of maps and plans held at the National Library of Scotland (the Bartholomew Collection).
The internship will be managed in partnership with the Institute of Conservation.The intern will focus on the remedial treatment of a portfolio containing several badly damaged maps, plans, prints and other paper documents.
With the support of an accredited library conservator, the intern will assess the portfolio and its contents and devise an appropriate treatment proposal.
After discussing the proposal with relevant library staff, such as the maps curator, the intern will proceed to treat and rehouse the items, striking an appropriate balance between enabling access and ensuring long-term preservation.
The Library has a Conservation Unit based in the Library's George IV Bridge building along with a separate dedicated conservation space in the Causewayside building for this project.
The intern will be expected to participate fully in the activities of the Unit, for example by attending team meetings and training events, by assisting with outreach activities such as tours of the conservation workshop and volunteer programmes, and by assisting with our Duty Conservator rota.
The intern will also be expected to produce quarterly reports and regular updates on social media about their internship.
The National Library of Scotland preserves the memory of the nation with collections that span the centuries, from the earliest times to the digital age.
