Job summary

The post is WTE Paediatric specialist physiotherapist working over 4 days with some flexibility available. This post holder will provide physiotherapy to babies and children with Cystic Fibrosis (CF), non-CF bronchiectasis and a variety of other respiratory conditions. This patient group attends Kings from the South East England, as outpatients and inpatients, and there may be home/ nursery/school visits to the local children and some out-reach clinics..

Main duties of the job

To provide a high quality, effective and efficient physiotherapy service for Paediatric CF and other respiratory conditions. To provide is to use highly specialist physiotherapy knowledge and skills to manage own complex caseload as an autonomous practitioner. To participate in the tertiary multi-disciplinary paediatric CF clinics. To be an active participant in the MDT discussions at meetings, including CF MDT, microbiology meetings and any safeguarding meetings. To provide thorough respiratory physiotherapy assessment and prescribe individual physiotherapy treatment plans, including but not limited to, airway clearance techniques, mucolytic/nebuliser advice/ set-up, exercise advice and testing. To be responsible for supervising junior members of staff and students including inducting new members of staff, providing teaching to new/rotational members of staff and conducting clinical and non-clinical supervision sessions in order to meet individual and service needs. To instigate audit and research for this client group. To deputise for the Paediatric CF Clinical Lead when necessary To participate in service development meetings for the clinical areas covered by this post. To represent the Trust at regional events or meetings Association of Chartered Physiotherapists in Cystic Fibrosis and develop best practice at King's through liaison with other regional specialists/colleagues and other relevant forums.

Variety Children's Hospital at Kings College Hospital is home to one of the UK's leading centres for Children. Every year more than 40,000 sick children/neonates are treated and cared for at the hospital. There is a Critical Care Unit consisting of a PICU and HDU, 4 childrens wards with additional short stay unit and day unit, NICU, Paediatric A&E and a busy out patient department. We are a tertiary referral service for children with respiratory diseases, serving the South East of England as well as other specialist services including Liver Disease, Neurosurgery and Oncology.

Job responsibilities

To lead on production of clinical guidelines and local policies ensuring they are evidence-based, implemented and audited. To provide guidance and advice to other professions and bodies involved in the provision of CF service and respiratory services, and to the patients and their carers. This post requires a flexible approach to working, and requires the post holder to be an active member of the weekend duty rotas, and cover of statutory and public holidays on a pro rata basis.

Communication and Representation

To represent the Trust at regional events or meetings Annual CF regional meetings, annual John Price paediatric respiratory meetings, in order to develop best practice at Kings through liaison with other regional specialists/colleagues and other relevant forums To represent the department and profession at trust-based working groups and provide highly specialist knowledge to those groups. To be able to persuade and motivate patients through effective communication skills. Provide patients, families and other carers with specialist advice and instruction to promote the understanding of the aims of physiotherapy and to ensure consistent patient management. To provide and receive information from patients, carers and other professionals regarding a patients condition and treatment progress. This will include the sharing and receiving of some complex and/or sensitive information To communicate effectively with patients and carers to maximize rehabilitation potential and to improve understanding of the condition which will require the appropriate response to the patients level of communication, facilitating the best possible communication outcome use of interpreters. To develop and maintain close working relationships with other members of the team, ensuring appropriate attendance at ward rounds, multi-disciplinary meetings and case conferences, including occasional organisation of the latter. To provide recommendations of clinical management and highly specialist advice to the MDT and external organisations. To develop and maintain close working relationships with physiotherapy colleagues, referring clinicians and other appropriate professions and agencies in the provision of care to all patient cohorts. To be integral in discharge planning including liaison with staff in referring hospitals or community staff, to which patients are discharged for further rehabilitation, providing timely discharge reports. To participate and organise service development meetings for the patient groups cared for. To take an active part in departmental meetings. To ensure open lines of communication within own team and guide junior staff in effective communication skills. To be responsible for local management of informal conflicts, disagreements and complaints.

Information systems and data management

To be responsible for maintenance of accurate records including appropriate electronic systems and supervision of departmental record keeping; to include comprehensive progress and discharge reports to medical referrers and legal and disability reports To identify appropriate outcome measures and service impact measures which accurately evaluate patient response and service development needs.

Physical Resources

To apply for appropriate equipment funding from outside organisation eg individual funding requests To maintain equipment inventory, ensure equipment is ordered appropriately and investigate bids for further equipment To be responsible for regular inspection and ensure reporting of defects of equipment used in this area To be aware of the cost/benefit implications in the selection of appropriate equipment to be provided for patient long-term use as an individual and by the team

Education & Professional Development

To be responsible for supervision, teaching and appraisal of students and other health professionals To be responsible for the allocation of undergraduate student physiotherapists and to regularly liaise with the academic institutions To keep abreast in understanding and knowledge of all new developments which are applicable to specific physiotherapy treatments and to attend and actively participate in the departments in-service training program and other outside courses/ lectures as appropriate To be pro-active with regard to learning from other physiotherapy staff within the department, and other MDT staff in the Trust To be responsible for and actively record own personal professional development and maintain a CPD portfolio which reflects same Person Specification
