To provide high quality, comprehensive, expert, skilled Orthoptic services in an eye unit, which is a national centre of excellence.

To assess, diagnose, manage and treat all cases of adult and paediatric ocular motility defects and all other referrals.

To use expert knowledge to assess and manage patients as part of a leading team of international specialists.

To provide Orthoptic services for Accident and Emergency walk in patients.

To liaise and provide these services with Ophthalmologists, medical staff in other specialities, nursing and paramedical staff.


To collaborate and co-operate with other clinicians, administrative and managerial staff to influence service development and ensure quality care is delivered.

To provide clinical and theoretical teaching and liaise with the Department of Orthoptics Liverpool University.

To provide clinical and theoretical teaching to medical, nursing and paramedical staff.


Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust was created on 1 October 2019 following the merger of two adult acute Trusts, Aintree University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and the Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospitals NHS Trust.


The merger provides an opportunity to reconfigure services in a way that provides the best healthcare services to the city and improves the quality of care and health outcomes that patients experience.

The Trust runs Aintree University Hospital, Broadgreen Hospital, Liverpool University Dental Hospital and the Royal Liverpool University Hospital.


It serves a core population of around 630,000 people across Merseyside as well as providing a range of highly specialist services to a catchment area of more than two million people in the North West region and beyond.

CLINICAL

  • To perform and be responsible for a broad range of expert skills, complex, comprehensive investigative, diagnostic and therapeutic Orthoptic procedures on all patients regardless of physical and mental disabilities including language barriers.
  • To formulate treatment plans and instruct patients and carers on continuous courses of home therapies.
  • Independently implement, review and alter treatment, based on Orthoptic assessment, interpretation and evaluation of a wide range of conditions.
  • To act as a source of expert clinical knowledge for consultants, clinical colleagues, patients and carers for routine and as part of a leading team of specialists.
  • Work in partnership with consultants, optometrists, doctors and other medical professions, diagnose and treat and recommend further treatment options to other medical professionals.
  • To provide highly specialised expertise within specialist clinics: Macular Relocation clinics, Macular clinics, Stroke Unit, A&E Primary Care, Adjustable Squint surgery, Adult ocular motility and Botulinum Toxin.
  • To independently assess, diagnose and where possible treat A&E Primary Care walk in patients and Ophthalmic outpatients as first expert practitioner.
  • To perform additional specialised skills of visual and ocular assessment: Colour vision, contrast sensitivity and visual field analysis.
  • Collect, interpret and evaluate information and maintain accurate patient records.
  • To be the sole provider of the Orthoptic service as part of a multi-disciplinary team/ and in coordination with other health professionals across the trust.
  • To diagnose, treat and manage new patients referred to the Orthoptist as the initial assessment in the ophthalmic clinic and specialist clinics.
  • To communicate complex diagnosis, treatment and management plans containing sensitive or contentious information where patients and/or carers may have major emotional, physical and psychological problems.
  • To co-ordinate and participate in complex tests with other professions.
  • Manage frequent, unpredictable, verbal immediate referrals from own and other directorates on a daily basis.

MANAGERIAL

  • To provide administrative and managerial duties.
  • Organise and manage appointments and clinics.
  • To regularly liaise with medical, optometry, nursing, other health and clerical staff to maintain a high level of patient care.
  • To maintain close links with other clinical specialities, allowing convenient and easy interdepartmental referral and care planning: Directorate of Rehabilitation and acute medical services for the Elderly, Neurology, Maxillo-Facial.
  • Evaluate service delivery, identify areas for improvement and recommend change.
  • Ensure effective and efficient use of physical resources, making recommendations regarding equipment and supplies.
