The Role

We are seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer to join our team. This is an exciting opportunity to work on diverse and challenging projects, contribute to our expanding client base and play a pivotal role in enhancing our EMC capability.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead and contribute to a wide range of rolling stock, infrastructure and research-driven projects on behalf of esteemed clients such as Alstom, Eversholt, Hitachi, Irish Rail, LNER and RSSB.
  • Collaborate with Principal EMC Engineers to ensure project delivery adheres to high-quality standards and meets established timelines.
  • Develop engineering safety cases with a focus on electrical engineering aspects, including but not limited to overhead line harmonics, interference into trackside equipment, train borne interference interacting with safety-critical signalling systems, and compliance with EMC standards like EN
  • Mitigate interference generated by power electronics, machines (typically AC), and control systems to ensure appropriate SIL integrity.
  • Conduct risk assessments (Yellow book/CSM-RA), facilitate hazid meetings, maintain hazard records, analyse equipment failure modes, and work closely with TOC/ROSCO and regulatory bodies such as NR/ORR/RSSB.
  • Utilise simulation and modelling techniques to analyse traction equipment and it's environment, process measured data, perform FFT's (Fast Fourier Transforms), and extract critical information using software tools like MATLAB, Diadem, etc.
  • Prepare comprehensive technical engineering reports and develop credible safety arguments to demonstrate the safety of proposed changes and control risks to an acceptable level.
  • Engage and gain support from interested parties, including infrastructure controllers (usually NR), OOR, TOCs and ROSCOS, to obtain agreement on safety justifications.

Key Competencies and Experience

  • Experience in electrical engineering preferably with a focus on EMC.
  • Proven expertise in writing engineering safety cases, specifically addressing electrical engineering issues related to EMC compliance, harmonics, interference, and signalling systems.
  • Strong understanding of power electronics, AC machines, and control systems to effectively mitigate interference and ensure SIL integrity.
  • Experience in risk assessment methodologies (Yellow book/CSM – RA), hazid meetings, hazard record management, equipment failure modes analysis, and working with TOCs/ROSCOs, NR/ORR/RSSB.
  • Knowledge of the Energy NTSN is desirable.
  • Proficiency in simulating and modelling traction equipment, analysing measured data, and utilising software tools like Matlab, Diadem, etc for FFT analysis and critical information extraction.
  • Excellent technical report writing skills and the ability to develop credible safety arguments.
  • Demonstrated ability to engage and collaborate with stakeholders, including infrastructure controllers, regulatory bodies and industry partners.
  • Strong attention to detail, problem solving abilities, and a passion for delivering high-quality results.
