Bereavement Cafés Coordinator

24 hours per month (8 x 3hrs sessions per month)

Do you have knowledge of the grieving process, experience of working with people, have good interpersonal and communication skills? If yes - you may be the person we are looking for.
It's an exciting time at Tynedale Hospice at Home:

  • We are reaching more people and increasing our range of outstanding services;
  • We are increasing the number of Bereavement Cafés in Tynedale for local people who are experiencing loneliness and grief after losing someone close to them.
  • We are helping our clients to move on with their life post bereavement with support and kindness.


We run regular Bereavement Cafés (currently in Hexham, Prudhoe Ponteland and Haltwhistle) with the aim of bringing together and supporting those in the community who have experienced the loss of someone close to them.

The cafés operate on a drop-in basis and offer a safe and comforting space for people to come together, regardless of how recent or how long ago their bereavement was.

There is no obligation to talk, it could simply be an opportunity to meet others and share a cup of tea or coffee in the company of others who understand.

Trained members of the Family Support team are on hand to welcome people and make sure they feel comfortable.

We are seeking a highly motivated individual with a passion for people, supporting them at a vulnerable time in their lives to co-ordinate our Bereavement Cafés

The role includes:

  • Providing support to volunteers and clients attending the café
  • Responsibility for volunteer rotas ensuring cover for each session.
  • Setting up and clearing away at the start and end of each café and replenishing refreshments etc.
  • You will have experience of supporting bereaved people both on a one to one basis as well as in a group. Knowledge and understanding of the grieving process / journey is essential.
  • A flexible approach to meet service needs and the ability to work autonomously is also required.
  • You will need to be able to meet the transport requirements of the role as our cafés are held at various venues in Tynedale.
  • You will have IT experience including working with Word and Excel.
