Job Purpose

UGIC is seeking to appoint an enthusiastic and motivated Academic Director to join the college at a stage where it has experienced sustained growth. The Academic Director has an important contribution to make to the success of the College and of its students. The post holder will have overall responsibility for all aspects of academic quality, teaching delivery, resources, student experience and academic leadership. The Academic Director will be able to draw on the expertise of existing Programme Co-ordinators and the Head of English.

Based in close proximity to University of Greenwich's Maritime campus, UGIC offers a wide range of courses to international students, all of which, upon successful completion, allow progression to a variety of university degrees, both undergraduate and postgraduate, at University of Greenwich. Our students come from over 60 different countries providing an incredibly diverse community of learners. Main duties and responsibilities

College Management

  • With the College Director, College Manager and Head of English, the Academic Director forms part of the senior team and can therefore expect significant management responsibilities related to the management of the College to be delegated to him or her;
  • Deputise for the College Director in the absence of the College Director;
  • Support the College Director in fulfilling the Collaboration and Service Level Agreements (CA and SLA) and ensuring that the College meets the requirements of any other inspecting bodies and the University's internal quality audits and reviews.
  • Represent the college at the Group Academic Board
  • Create and maintain effective communication channels with the link tutors in the university of Greenwich, including through the holding of regular meetings;

Team Management

  • Lead, inspire and motivate staff to deliver high quality performance in all areas.
  • Line manage, support and develop senior academic colleagues as appropriate.
  • Lead the recruitment, induction, development and performance management of teaching staff as appropriate.
  • Provide staff with on-going support and guidance with regard to programme goals, curriculum, materials and methodology.
  • Ensure teaching staff follow best pedagogical practice and adhere to agreed principles of learning and teaching within the college;
  • Conduct class observation and provide feedback.
  • Promote a collaborative working environment to maintain and enhance the quality of the student learning experience and the overall teaching-learning environment.
  • Be responsible for academic policy, priorities and objectives.
  • Contribute to the senior team in planning for the scheduling of the content classes in an appropriate and cost-effective manner

Programme Delivery and Quality Assurance

  • Develop, lead and co-ordinate the college's programmes and academic resources (including the annual curriculum review process, timetabling, assessments and tutor recruitment/deployment) with an understanding of the college's commercial targets, the maximising of student continuation to University of Greenwich (UoG) courses and optimum student satisfaction levels.
  • Teach up to 10 hours a week
  • Lead on oversight and interactions with external bodies such as the Office for Students
  • Lead on internal reviews, validation and accreditation processes.
  • Manage the annual curriculum review and the quality assurance for all programmes in conjunction with other senior leader, colleagues and UoG.

Resources

  • Lead the team in the writing of teaching plans, teaching materials, assignments and summative assessments
  • Encourage the development and use of the VLE and other learning technologies.
  • Ensure all necessary academic texts, handbooks and teaching materials are produced, procured, updated, catalogued and securely maintained.
  • Lead the development of new academic programmes in line with market needs.

Students

  • Ensure that students are adequately prepared to continue their chosen University course.
  • Liaise with the College Manager for the student disciplinary procedures and their implementation.
  • Oversee the formal interaction that students have with their destination university faculties, to support progression.
  • Monitor student progress and the identification of those who are struggling so that they can be offered support as quickly and effectively as possible.
  • With the Senior Tutor, ensure appropriate guidance and support is given to students regarding their academic choices.
  • Develop and monitor effective systems to ensure student feedback is central to review processes.
  • Contribute to, and lead academically, the overall management of student expectations to achieve the highest possible student satisfaction.

Assessment

  • Be responsible for the overall co-ordination of assessments scheduling, invigilation, exam/test assessments and the production of academic reports and ensure these are delivered in the most effective and efficient way to the required quality standards (in liaison with the Administration team).
  • Contribute to the Academic Practice process for the college.
  • Contribute to Assessment Boards as required.

Additional

  • Provide the College Director with advice on all academic matters in light of commercial imperatives and financial targets.
  • Use management information effectively to contribute to the continuous improvement of academic systems and processes.
  • Contribute to the formulation of the annual budget and the regulation of expenditure in the college.
  • Assist the implementation of the college's attendance policy.
  • Maintain good relationships with UoG colleagues.
  • Work across OIEG on academic issues and projects as appropriate.
  • Liaise with all relevant stakeholders in relation to all academic issues.

Statutory requirements

Qualifications

  • A relevant Master's Degree, PGCE or equivalent
  • English language teaching qualification

Experience and knowledge

  • Relevant Management & teaching experience involving international students, preferably within a UK further or higher education context.
  • Experience of higher education quality assurance processes.
  • Recent experience of academic management in a university embedded international college

  • Flexibility and adaptability
