Position Summary

This recruitment will be used to fill one part-time (a maximum of 24 hours per week) Residential and Communications Assistant for the Hatfield Marine Science Center at Oregon State University ( OSU ).

Assist community and communications development at OSU Hatfield Marine Science Center as an ambassador for inclusive experiential learning at the coast. The employee will help to support Hatfield summer operations activities, including but not limited to: events, outreach materials, point of contact for housing residents, driving motor pool vans for curricular and extra-curricular activities. Other duties include attending and supporting Hatfield community events, such as seminars, and actions to foster safe, inclusive student experiences. In an effort to support communications at Hatfield, the employee will contribute to communications about experiential learning at the coast including working with the Marine and Coastal Opportunities office staff to create content for facility tours and website.

Position Duties

Community Development (30%)


Execute and support community programming as directed by your supervisor, including but not limited to:

  • individual conversations with residents, hosting and executing community building events and activities, creating and posting bulletin boards, and creating and posting door decorations.
  • Work with your supervisor to determine your community needs to create and execute an action plan utilizing the community building tools.
  • Co-facilitate community orientations and meetings each term.
  • Promote, attend, and participate in programming HMSC campus programming including but not limited to weekly research seminars, Markham symposium, and Marine Science Day.
Create and maintain strong positive relationships with the community, such as:
  • Identify and facilitate connections and relationships between residents in the community.
  • Role model academic success and engagement through resident interactions.
  • Promote academic initiatives in the community and refer residents to academic resources.
  • Promote and practice social justice values within the community and create a safe space for relationship building across differences.
  • Identify and respond to resident needs through consultation and referral of campus resources.
  • Support and promote health and wellness strategies for yourself and the residents in your community.
Support housing, curricular and extracurricular activities:
  • Be accessible in campus housing during evening and weekend hours to ensure availability to residents.
  • Drive residents and students in university-owned 12- or 15-passenger vans for orientation, field trips and/or course-related activities.
Student Behavior and Crisis Management (10%)
  • Confront and report potential policy violations and behavior that is disruptive to the community to your supervisor.
  • Role model behavior expected of students as outlined in the Student Conduct Code and HMSC Housing Policy Guide.
  • Communicate expectations of appropriate behavior and University policy information to residents.
  • Communicate any incidents and resident concerns to supervisor.
  • Understand and implement emergency response protocol and procedures.
  • Communicate and educate residents on safe practices and the appropriate action to take in the event of an emergency.
  • Communicate with the professional staff member on call during crisis response.
  • Refer residents to appropriate support services as needed.
  • Serve on duty rotation to provide support to housing residents.
Administration and Communications (60%)
  • Attend and participate in regular meetings with your supervisor, monthly HMSC Safety Awareness Form and any other assigned meetings.
  • Assist with after-hours and weekend resident arrivals and departures.
  • Prepare apartments for incoming residents, which may include moving and carrying linen packets, moving and carrying dishes and cookware, moving furniture within an apartment, and doing minor cleaning tasks.
  • Complete Duty Logs and Room Condition Reports accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Submit maintenance requests
  • Monitor Discord channel and disseminate information when appropriate.
  • Assist with laundry room operation and schedule.
  • Check email at least twice a day and respond as requested.
  • Participate in term transitions, which may include a high volume of arrivals and departures, room checks, and campus tours.
  • Participate in all trainings and orientations.
  • Provide feedback in the appropriate time, place, or manner.
  • Demonstrate timeliness.
  • Complete other tasks as assigned.
  • Support facility tours, including compiling content for current and future tours
  • Support digital communications through compiling content about courses and other experiential learning such as internships
Other conditions:
  • Occasionally lifting up to 20 pounds
  • Communicating with members of the OSU community and the public, some of whom may be hostile
  • Driving a university-owned 12- to 15-passenger van
COMPENSATION
  • $14.70/Hour
  • Furnished residence hall-style room, shared with other student workers.
  • Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study
  • Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment
  • Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard
    • High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program
    • Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term
    • Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term*
    • Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term
    • Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term*
*International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered "full-time" by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services ( USCIS ). A reduced course load is approved by the Office of International Services ( OIS ), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.
