We are currently seeking a highly motivated Engineer to work as a Senior Engineer in our busy Urban Traffic Management Control Unit.

We have over 376 Traffic Signal installations on street that are either controlled or monitored by a Swarco System. We have an ongoing programme of new installations and major transportation proposals over the next few years that will rely heavily on sophisticated traffic signal engineering and traffic management technology for their success.

We have varied operation at our sites, VA, MOVA, SCOOT, FIXED TIME UTC, SPRUCE. Bus priority and cycle provisions is a high priority on schemes as is scoot. Experience in all of the above is desirable. The council is seeking to improve its customer journey time experience on all modes of transport as well as walking.

Bradford council has a varied communications network ranging from the majority of sites on Fibre and the rest on wireless communications with a small amount on 3g/4g sim cards. We have full RGB vms signs and a parking guidance system also. We have a large amount of Bluetooth journey time detectors. Experience in the above is desirable.

You will be expected to:

  • Carry out feasibility and concept studies, public engagement and consultation, design, inspections, assessments, procurement, construction supervision and project management on a variety of highway, structural, casualty reduction, traffic management, traffic signal and UTC, integrated transport, public transport and civil engineering projects for programmes undertaken by the service on behalf of internal and external clients.
  • To support and advise elected members of Council and MPs as the accountable representatives of the public and other key stakeholders and to support the Principal Engineer in the performance of functions associated with the servicing of Council and other committees, neighbourhood forums and public engagement events.
  • Initiate, develop and promote Local Transport Plan and Community Strategy projects on behalf of the Council.
  • To provide expertise and specialist knowledge in aspects of the following appropriate to the placement within the Service: Urban traffic control and signal maintenance. Be responsible for the supervision and direction of junior members of the team in relation to the delivery of projects and activities of the service including Assistant Engineers, Technicians, Inspectors, Clerks of Works and Apprentices.
  • Ensure that the Council's legal obligations as Highway Authority under the Highways Act, Road Traffic Act and other allied legislation are fulfilled. Ensure the services delivered meet the needs of local people, that continuous improvement in delivery is actively pursued and that the performance targets are achieved.

It is It is essential you have the following:

  • The applicant is required to provide evidence of having previously spoken fluently to members of the public in order to meet the advanced threshold level outlined under Special Knowledge above.
  • Experience as Senior Traffic Signals / UTC Engineer in a large engineering organisation.
  • Incorporated Engineer status OR Chartered Status will be required to gain a higher pay grade.

  • Microsoft office programs
  • Specification 2500 writing
