Summary

Historic England are excited to be seeking an Historic Environment Adviser Apprentice.

The Development Advice Team target their work where we can add most value to decision-making and outcomes.

Our skills and expertise range across specialisms including historic buildings and areas, archaeology and monuments, landscape, and town and regional planning.

The team work very closely with other Historic England teams aiding people to conserve and understanding historic places.


As part of the Development Advice Team, the Historic Environment Adviser Apprentice will assist colleagues in the delivery of Historic England's advice on proposals for change in the historic environment.

As our apprentice we will ensure excellent structured training and mentoring is at the core of your experience. This role will also contribute to specific projects for our corporate objectives and statutory functions. We will look to you as an active and aspirational member of the team.


The Historic Environment Adviser Apprentice is offered as a 27 month Fixed Term Contract, and will be based in the Birmingham office.

What you will be doing

You will be working towards completion of your Historic Environment Adviser apprenticeship over the course of 27 months.

80% of your time will be spent in the workplace, and 20% of your time will be spent "off the job", completing a training programme specially designed for your apprenticeship, delivered with our training partners Strode College.

Some of this training will be delivered by residential block release, meaning you will spend up to one week at a time on campus at the college, as well as online learning.

At work (80% of your time) the experience you will gain on the job will include:

  • To support the Development Advice team in delivering advice on development proposals for change in the historic environment, meeting timescales and excellent customer service standards.
  • To be a proactive and collaborative member of the Development Team and to assist with the development and implementation of the team plans and wider Corporate objectives.
  • To be an effective advocate for conserving heritage assets.
  • To assist with the delivery of our Corporate Plan, Historic England's Future Strategy, Public Value Framework, and other national and local strategies in agreement with line management, including working on specific projects.
  • To undertake any other reasonable duties commensurate with the grade and competencies required of the post requested by line management.
What will you learn


You will be supervised by a line manager and guided by a variety of staff including your wider team, a personal mentor and our dedicated Early Careers team.

You will also have regular contact with other apprentices to help each other through your apprenticeship at Historic England.

  • You can demonstrate good communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • You are curious and have a desire to continuously learn.

  • The role requires travel to sites not serviced by public transport.
  • The role requires visiting/inspecting sites which is likely to require climbing scaffolding and negotiating confined spaces (e.g. church roofs).
  • The role may require occasional attendance at community or planning meetings which may be held at evenings or weekends.
