The ENP is an experienced nurse that has a clearly defined role within the urgent care centre (UCC). The ENP has achieved qualifications in minor injuries and/or working towards minor illness modules and will be expected to work autonomously within defined parameters to deliver care to patients attending the UCC and will provide expert and specialist advice to patients and the multidisciplinary team.

The ENP practices clinical autonomy with respect to patients presenting with a wide range of injuries and illnesses within clinical governance limits. The ENP will work to national and hospital guidelines in relation to evidence based practice, they will exercise their judgement in seeking specialist opinion, for example orthopaedics, plastics, max fax etc, or will process to definitive treatment within his/her scope of professional practice. The ENP is authorised to discharge patients without reference to any medical clinician within clinical governance limits.

They should be competent in or working towards a qualification for non-medical prescribing (NMP).

The ENP is individually responsible for his/her professional development in line with the Code of Professional Conduct.

Main duties of the job CLINICAL
  • Clinically autonomous practitioner for patients attending the UCC.
  • Work autonomously to manage own caseload of patients whilst working as part of the multidisciplinary team.
  • Ensure that patients receive high quality clinical care including formulating a working medical diagnosis for patients presenting with undifferentiated urgent or emergency health care problems.
  • Acts as a patient's advocate and supports them to be involved in decision making about their care.
  • Order and interpret diagnostic tests and make referrals and or discharge.
  • Arrange admission of patients to hospital when required alongside thorough referrals via appropriate specialities.
  • Administer medication within Patient Group Directions or if qualified and appropriate, via independent prescribing.
  • Be a resource of clinical knowledge and expertise to nurses and doctors alike.
  • Working flexibly to suit the needs of the service.
  • Provide specialist knowledge and advice within the UCC to maximise patient and professional use of community healthcare options and reduce dependence on the UCC.
  • Ensures that own clinical competencies within the UCC are met and evidence of ongoing clinical competency is adhered to.
  • To ensure that ENP procedures are carried out in accordance with the Airedale NHS Foundation Trust policies and procedures including taking appropriate action in an emergency.

  • Stores, checks, and administers drugs in accordance with trust policy.
  • Adheres to the infection control policy and promotes the policy with the UCC setting with all professionals who are interacting in patient care.
  • Be aware of role in the emergency escalation procedure for the four-hour target and the requirement to escalate to senior management in accordance with Trust Escalation policy.
  • Although the postholder has no direct budgetary responsibility they will be expected to assist with the effective use of resources in their clinical area.
PROFESSIONAL

Provide evidence-based practice through the use of latest research-based guidelines and the development of practice-based research.
  • Maintain continuing professional development to ensure up to date evidence-based knowledge and competence in all aspects of the role is maintained.
  • Work within the latest NMC code of conduct.
  • Record accurate documentation in patients records in accordance with NMC guidance.
  • Maintain effective communication both written and verbal with all disciplines, patients and relatives.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues within and external to the UCC.
  • Demonstrate daily ownership of the UCC.
  • Contributes to the development of local guidelines, protocols, and standards.
  • Report all incidents and near misses promptly and appropriately.
  • Deals effectively and sensitively with patient issues collaborating with PALS as appropriate and taking a proactive approach to resolving issues and learning lessons from complaints.
  • Be aware of, and adhere to, all the relevant trust policies and procedures, for example sickness reporting, absence management and uniform policy.
  • Will challenge poor behaviour and practice, and manage individuals following the trusts guidelines, policies, and procedures.
EDUCATION
  • Be aware of current nursing trends and development in nursing.
  • Undertake teaching sessions within the UCC relating to ENP skills.
  • Participate in development opportunities to enhance and expand the scope of professional practice delivered by autonomous practitioners within the UCC.
  • Act as a point of reference and guidance for junior nurses and doctors in the Emergency Department.
  • Act as an ENP mentor and facilitator.
  • Maintain own mandatory training.
  • Maintain evidence of own CPD to meet the NMC revalidation requirements.
  • Participate in any quality improvement programmes and evaluation of own practice within the clinical area.
  • Plan, organise and deliver training programmes related to specialty for nurses and other health professionals as required.
