Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a full-time band 6 to join the Urology Outpatients and diagnostic will work with an experienced Band 6 and outpatient team linking regularly with the multi-disciplinary team, assist and support the medical team (more than 20 Consultants and registrars).

The post holder will have the opportunity to utilise and expand their urology and management knowledge, facilitate, assist and supervise a variety of clinics and day case activities including diagnostics, prostate biopsies, flexible cystoscopies, Botox administration, bladder installations, clinician clinics and lithotripsy.

North Bristol NHS trust (NBT)is a tertiary referral center and we see patients from the Southwest- Penile cancers, Mesh complications. We are excited to move the TULA laser procedures to outpatients in the near future.

The majority of clinics are based in Gate 36 urology outpatients. The role is Monday to Friday with the occasional weekend. Clinics run from 08:00 to 18:00 and we have a late clinic on a Wednesday 08:00 to 20:30. Occasional weekends.

Main duties of the job

Working in collaboration with the Senior nursing team/ Matron/ Urology Management team the post holder's main duties will include:

Leading the nursing team in the delivery of evidence-based patient-centered care, which is of a high standard. Being a key member in facilitating changes in the needs of the service and play a vital role in the development of the outpatient team including their ongoing professional development. Support implementation of new procedures and equipment. Supporting the other Band 6 Sister and the Band 7 Senior Sister (currently on secondment) with managerial tasks including roster design, sickness management, appraisals, 1:1's and training. Maintain effective communication with the internal/external members of the multi-disciplinary team. Manage safe staffing levels for planned face to face and telephone clinics including forward planning for ad hoc clinics to facilitate increased referrals. Manage the training and further development for staff working in urology outpatients and diagnostics for their assessment and continual professional development. Work always within specialty, directorate and Trust guidelines, policies and procedures.

After a period of training and supervision you will be expected to support clinicians, carry out nurse led clinics and support and supervise clinics carried out in the department.

Urology outpatients and diagnostics Gate 36 Southmead Hospital. We are a large friendly team of registered nurses, assistant practitioners and health care assistants. We work as a team and independently providing nurse led clinics.

Job responsibilities

Leading the nursing team in the delivery of evidence-based patient-centered care, which is of a high standard. Working in partnership with the sister and clinicians in developing the team and the provision of the service, forming working relationships with urodynamics, Weston Urology, radiology and lithotripsy. Being involved in the co-ordination of the outpatient department, completion of audits, and mentorship of junior staff. Being a key member in facilitating changes in the needs of the service and play a vital role in the development of the outpatient team including their ongoing professional development. Support implementation of new procedures and equipment. Supporting the other Band 6 Sister and the Band 7 Senior Sister (currently on secondment) with managerial tasks including roster design, sickness management, appraisals and 1:1s and training.

Patient Care

Plan, allocate, supervise and evaluate working practices of the team on a day-to-day basis. Provide professional advice and support to team members so that they are able to assume responsibility to carry out delegated duties. Be responsible for implementation and delivery of nutritional and fluid standards including snack boxes for day case and transport patients. Review the effectiveness of treatments and make any necessary modifications, reporting to senior colleagues/medical staff as necessary. Ensure the safe storage and administration of medication, medical devices and fluids in accordance with Trust policies. Undertake the full range of extended/advanced clinical skills (relevant to clinical area) and supervise/assess others. Implement privacy and dignity standards within own sphere of responsibility and ensure the chaperone policy is implemented. Respect individuals dignity, wishes and beliefs, involving them in shared decision-making with consideration for the vulnerable patient, learning disabilities and child protection issues. Be aware of the required documentation pertaining to: DOLS Referral to Social Service Mental Capacity Mental Health Act Safeguarding referrals On identification of concerns, raise through the appropriate line management structures, if necessary, referring to the Trusts Whistle-blowing procedure. Act as advocate for staff/patients in internal and external forums, constructively challenging clinical teams as appropriate. On a shift-by-shift basis, be responsible for minimising the risks of infections and for the implementation of the relevant code of Practice for prevention and control of infection.

To contribute towards health promotion for patients and corers by providing education, support and advice. Ensure referral to appropriate professionals or agencies as required.

Communication and Information

Be able to communicate difficult, sometimes complex and emotive information. Accountable for self and team members for accurate and legible record keeping in accordance with local policies and NMC guidelines within own practice and sphere of responsibility. To Answer telephone enquiries and forward calls to relevant departments or individuals as the need arises. Trouble shoot, provide advice to avoid hospital admissions. Provide safety net advice.
