The Opportunity

There is an exciting opportunity for a Head of Data Science & Engineering to join the senior Data Services team within the Digital, Data, and Technology (DDaT) Directorate within a UK-based regulatory body. As Head of Data Science & Engineering, you will develop capabilities to support the transformation into a data-enabled organisation. The vision is to use digital, data, and technology to revolutionise regulation, making it more efficient, secure, transparent, and customer-centred. The Data Team is responsible for the data estate, defining and implementing the organisation's data strategy, and promoting data as a strategic business asset. Joining at an exciting stage of growth, you'll play a crucial role in shaping the future of data science and engineering capabilities, contributing to a data-enabled design transformation and putting users at the heart of all activities.

The Role

As Head of Data Science & Engineering, this role will be responsible for:

  • Delivering and refining the strategic direction for Data Science & Engineering capability, collaborating with colleagues to incorporate development requirements.
  • Leading and developing Data Science & Engineering teams, providing coaching and mentorship to ensure cross-platform expertise and support for the organisation.
  • Working with business users and product owners to advocate for the role of Data Engineering and Data Science, fostering positive change in designs and workflows. Cultivating relationships across sectors to facilitate data flow.
  • Driving efficiencies across operations, leveraging automation and staying updated on evolving data and technology trends.
  • Leading short to medium-term planning and oversee operational processes, implementing monitoring and alerting practices to ensure service reliability.

The Requirements

  • Expert Understanding & Specialist Knowledge: Demonstrable expert understanding of the data landscape, evolving requirements, technology, and trends, with the ability to evolve Data Science & Engineering ahead of the changing environment. Extensive specialist knowledge and leadership ability in data science, data exploitation, and data engineering.
  • Stakeholder Management & External Collaboration: Expert stakeholder management skills to collaborate with and engage business data owners/stakeholders, driving data use to deliver business objectives and outcomes. Proven ability to collaborate externally to the organisation.
  • Interpersonal Skills: Exceptional interpersonal and influencing skills, effectively communicating across technical and non-technical stakeholders, advocating for the team internally and externally.
  • Team Collaboration: In-depth understanding of facilitating discussions within multidisciplinary teams with differing perspectives.
  • Azure Expertise: Expert experience with Azure data platforms and leading teams working on these technologies.
