Applications are invited for the above permanent, full time post working in Estates and Campus Services within Bangor University.


Duties will include general maintenance and repair of various systems (including hot and cold-water distribution, drainage and waste systems, toilets / sinks, pumps, control systems etc.) and general maintenance works (such as basic carpentry work, plaster patching, wall tiling, guttering etc.

The ability to communicate through the medium of Welsh is desirable for this role.

Purpose of the job


Carry out a full range of repairs, maintenance and planned improvement duties, in a high quality and cost-effective manner, with the emphasis on plumbing works at various domestic and commercial properties within the University estate.

Main

Responsibilities:

  • General maintenance and repair of various systems including hot and coldwater distribution, drainage and waste systems, toilets / sinks, pumps, control systems etc.
  • Carry out additional general maintenance works such as basic carpentry work, plaster patching, wall tiling, guttering etc.
  • Investigate, troubleshoot, locate and repair faults, and take full responsibility for specific tasks, and any other aspects that may affect those tasks.
  • Undertake installation / alteration work as part of building refurbishment or change of use.
  • To work regularly alone in or around the University estate.
  • Instruct others on aspects of work relating to the post holder's original trade, including apprentices and other young persons.
  • To carry out work alongside, or assist, contractors in a cooperative manner.
  • To take responsibility for all vehicles, machines, tools, and equipment used whilst carrying out duties, ensuring they are used solely for the purposes they were intended and kept in a clean and safe working condition. To take all necessary precautions to always safeguard University property.
  • Prepare and clean surfaces using handheld power tools and the appropriate methods.
  • Utilise different techniques and methods to ensure the efficient and productive use of time and work with varied materials and handheld / power tools.
  • Carry out all necessary associated administrative work.
  • Undertake work in a safe manner, following standard work practises and associated risk assessments. To work safely at heights, internally and externally using appropriate access equipment such as a tower scaffold.
  • To report accidents and near misses in line with the Campus Services procedure.
  • To interrogate and use handheld mobile devices to update workload and provide 'live' feedback on progress of work.
  • To check the asbestos register before undertaking any work (where appropriate) and take action relevant to the information issued.
  • Assist on minor works projects, new installation works, service repairs and testing, and any other typical electrical work or handyperson work as found to be necessary on commercial / industrial systems.
  • To carry out work alongside, or assist, contractors in a cooperative manner.
  • Report any concerns regarding the work environment to the appropriate supervisor/manager.
  • To promote and maintain good customer relations whilst carrying out duties.

Responsibilities:

Person Specification

Qualifications/Training

Essential

  • Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Domestic Plumbing and Heating (Gas Fired Water & Central Heating Appliances) or equivalent qualification.
Desirable

  • Approved apprenticeship or relevant formal building trade craft/ part qualification.
Experience/Knowledge

Essential

  • Experience in finding fault on mechanical equipment and systems, problem solving and using initiative to resolve / repair as required.
  • Experience of working as a plumber in the building trade, either as a plumber or as a multi skilled plumber.
